Dr. E. Dewey Smith, Jr. Appoints The First Woman Lead Pastor At The House Of Hope!!

Reader Dr. E. Dewey Smith Senior Pastor of The House Of Hope Atlanta has caused some confusion among the members with the appointment of Pastor Jennifer Carner as the ministry's new lead pastor. Now, I'm wondering why this slightly misleading title "Lead Pastor" was used as opposed to "Executive Pastor", which better captures the job description that they have provided. I think seeing as how a Senior Pastor and a Lead Pastor are usually understood to be the same thing. Just my thoughts!

(You can read about it here)

Anyhow this appointment by Dr. E. Dewey Smith, Jr., marks the first time in the church’s 141-year history that a woman has been tapped to serve as the Lead Pastor – overseeing all day to day operations. Prior to Pastor Carner being named Lead Pastor, both Dr. Smith and his predecessor, Rev. H. F. Shepherd, selected women to serve in key positions such as Director of Ministry Operations, Chief Financial Officer and Director of Christian Education. What sets this appointment apart is that it marks the first time that a woman will have oversight with making sure that all of the ministry’s endeavors, ministry planning and business ventures are undertaken with consideration from pastoral, biblical and business perspectives.

    1. In the words of Dr. Earl Carter, E. Dewey Smith pastors a Babylonian church with a Walmart Marketing system that cuts the price to keep the people coming!

  2. Ann you are right words matter. "Lead" Pastor overseeing day to day operations sounds like the CEO type position that a lot of ministries are exploring more these days.
Sr. Pastor and a Lead Pastor that is female? Is that a wise setup in today's world? She's pursuing a Ph.D in Womanist Studies. I think that says a lot.

I dont have a problem with women ministers, especially leading women in the Church, but the Pastor role is biblically suited for men.

  3. What exactly does this mean? Is E.Dewey Smith no longer going to be the Pastor?? Or is it going to be like House of Hop Macon where she would be campus pastor similar to Reginald Sharpe??

  4. "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. 15Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

"Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. 36What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?

So tell me, when did these verses become of non effect, we can have this young woman be a PASTOR" Forget all the garbage about LEAD, OR CEO, or SR. Pastor, and titles or whatever.

When did we decide to throw these words away, and made them become irrelevant? Were they done away with the Woman's Movement? Or maybe with a private interpretation after Scriptures were written? Are we to incorporate the ideal not distinguish between gender since the Holy Ghost indwells men and women? WHAT are we going to believe? WHY?

  5. "Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law."

WHAT LAW? WHAT LAW says women are commanded to be silent?! I'm not living in ancient Greece!! Paul wrote that to the Greeks, as that was THEIR cultural LAW. I am not a Greek nor a Jew.

    1. No, don't twist it.

It never says there was a law for woman to be silent. The verse plainly sayS they are COMMANDED to be under obedience, as the LAW CALLS FOR OBEDIENCE. Laws are nothing without OBEDIENCE, that's the purpose of having laws.

Paul wrote to the CORINTHIANS. He wrote a lot about love and the LORD supper and marriage, etc. So since we don't live in Greece, does that mean nothing he wrote apply to us today?

    2. Rightly divide the Word!! The Bible says to stone adulterers but WE DON'T STONE FOLKS in the USA DO WE??

      Delete
    3. You rightly divide. You asked what LAW, NOT Understanding. Paul gave a command women keep silent. You said it's cultural. Now you talking about stoning which is an OT practice, the LORD DONE away with.

  6. I commend this big step for this Ministry. I understand lead Pastor to be the primary leader but I understand her role to be more administrative which I suppose frees Rev. Dr. Smith to do more of his speaking and other roles he now has.

    1. Nope. Dewey said she can preach and teach in any environment. She will preach to men over the pulpit. This is unbiblical. This is rebellion. This is sin.

      Delete
    2. Paul said that women are not to USURP authority from men. Usurp means TO TAKE OVER Authority. If a man WILLINGLY accepts a woman's authority then NO HARM, NO FOUL!!!

      Delete
    3. Nope. Quit ya lieing. Say nothing if a man is unwilling to accept.

      Delete
    4. The "Pulpit" Is Unbiblical. It Is Man Made. Paul Told The Corinthians, "Let YOUR Women", He Was Not Talking About "All" Women. So, Are Saying That Is Literal, Symbolic Or What. What Is The Law In Corinth At That Time For Women. Remember He Is Talking To Gentiles That Do Not Know The Laws Of God As The Jews Do. Shalom

  7. Paul continues to say 'I' not 'the Lord
said'. So if you're going to continue to try to cry about a women's place at least have the decency to present an intelligent argument.

1 Tim 2: 9Iwnn like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; 10But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. 11Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. 12But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

  8. Why you would come here and blatently lie is beyond me. You cote 1 tim 2 9, yet right before that is vs. 7 that says "Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity."

He said "he speak the truth in Christ".

This you did has nothing to do with intelligence, more like you are STRAIGHT UP LIEING!

  9. Poor thang. So now you need a grammar lesson. :(

    1. Better be a poor at grammar, that good at lieing.

    2. Christ is the Supreme Authority, not Paul! Do I need a former Pharisee telling me his opinion, or do I use GOD'S words? GOD IS GOD. PAUL is NOT God. Whenever any believer reads the Pauline Epistles, be sure to separate Paul's personal opinions from God's commandments. That is wisdom WHICH SO MANY OF YOU LACK.

      Delete
    3. Look...I just plainly stated to you Paul said "he speak the truth in Christ", TWO verses before the one YOU quoted. You ignore that and now come to make up another of your lies to sound good saying "Christ is the Supreme Authority". No need for your foolishness to advise any to separate Paul's opinion. We all can read where Paul would inject to say so. You however choose to isogete the Scripture, to cover up your sin because you rebel under the leadership of a woman PASTOR.

My advice to you is to tell that woman she is in the flesh, leave that congregation if she remain.
And of you are the woman teaching men, you should discontinue immediately.

Better to be poor at grammar, than to be a woman preacher ANY DAY!

      Delete
    4. I'm glad CHRIST is the final Authority...Paul isn't and neither is you. Paul makes a lot of "I" statements as well, which is usually his opinion on a subject. BUT thank God that HE is the final Authority, not you or Paul.

      Delete
    5. You are STILL stuck in YOUR STUPOR!

Again, Paul makes it clear when He's speaking, "not the LORD". He says so explicitly like he did in 1 Cor.7:12 "But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away."

And even in verse 10 "And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:" even though He says here the LORD was speaking.

He did NOT do so here! So cut out the foolishness, Get from under that WOMAN preacher, Stop teaching men folks or else YOU will suffer because of your disobedience.

The way of the TRANSGRESSOR is HARD! His yolk however is LIGHT!

  10. First, Scripture Only Mentions, "Pastors", Once. No Where In Scripture, Does It State, A "Pastor" Is To Be Over A Congregation Or The Head Or Main Leader Of A Congregation. No Where In Scripture Does It State "Senior Pastor, Co-Pastors, Assistant Pastor, Associate Pastor, Youth Pastor" Or Any Kind Of Pastor. Scripture States Elders And Leaders In Assemblies But, Not Pastors. Paul Said A Lot Of Things That Were Not Inspired By The Holy Spirit And When Studying Scripture You Must Know The Difference And Not Take Scripture Out Of Context. You Must Also Discern When Words Are Added To scripture Or Subtracted. Some Of You Are Still Stuck In The Translation Of The Greek Language Of The Scriptures To English And You Are Confused, As To The Culture Of The People He Is Talking To And What The Meanings Are Of What He Has Said. Shalom

    1. Thank you!! And where is the scripture which says a woman cannot be a pastor? I know about bishops being men, but I don't see any Scriptures against woman pastors. Do tell!

      Delete
    2. It appears some here want to remain ignorant in their ways they rebel. Again the Bible says "Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence." All this side track talk about Pastors and Bishops here, is just a waste.

      Delete
    3. BUT *I* suffer not a woman...Paul says *he* doesn't allow...And WHO ASKED YOU OR PAUL? ONCE AGAIN...that is Paul's personal opinion!! If the verse said the "Lord" then there would be no argument. And I wasn't talking to you!

      Delete
    4. And again...Paul said (as the SPIRIT of GOD inspired him to WRITE)-

"But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety."

THIS is NOT PAUL's OPINION! Paul makes it clear when He's speaking, and "not the LORD" like he did so 1 Cor.7:12 "But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away."

YOU can try to alter ALL YOU WANT, to give YOUR OPINION and lie to say IT was a cultural thing, or it was PAUL's OPINION - your words will never succeed the WORD the SPIRIT of GOD inspired PAUL to WRITE. Paul uses "I" throughout all his writings as the SPIRIT of GOD gave HIM unction to PEN. NOTHING you will conclude IN YOUR FLESH will EVER OVERSTATE that. No one is CALLED TO LISTEN to YOU! Only the WORD of GOD the LORD preserved in the CANON of SCRIPTURES shall we obey. Give up YOUR women's ministry! The LORD is NOT GOING TO BLESS YOU with your PRIDEFUL ATTITUDE!

    5. So, Did The Holy Spirit Inspire Satan's Words When Satan Spoke In The Old And New Testaments? If You Say Yes, To My Question, Then,That Means You Don't Comprehend Scriptures The Way They Are Written. And You Take Them Out Of Context. Shalom

      Delete
    6. Now you are really showing your IGNORANCE! You who claim to be so full of education and CARNAL spiritual insight, misses a simple little TRUTH, and blow out nothing but hot air.

Every word in the Word of God is inspired. Satan was never used by the Spirit of God to write anything. His words were only recorded by the writers as the Spirit of God unctioned them to do so.

Every word written by Matthew is inspired. Every word written by Moses, the Spirit of His inspired him. Every word wriien by Job, even the statement his wife made for him to cuss God and die is inspired, and is there as God's word for us today. The Holy Spirit NEVER use or inspire Satan to pen ANYTHING.

"All scripture is given by the: inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for rerpof, for correction, for instruction in righteouaness."
      II Timothy 3:16

    7. Well let's stop the scripture fight and look at the fruit of women leadership in the church. In what state is the church spiritually? How many men are there compared to women in the church? How are the family's doing? There is something seriously wrong in our churches en I believe it has to do with our disobedience to the Word of God. The Lord knew what He was doing when He created the man first and then the woman. But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of the woman, and the head of Christ is God. 1Cor 11:3

      Delete
    8. The fruit of MALE leadership...like Bishop Charles Blake is rotten fruit! Your point is moot? You must have never heard of Deborah in the Bible, a Female JUDGE who governed over men!!

      Delete
    9. Of course you want to stop the Scripture fighting. If we set aside Scriptures, what should we listen to? Your opinion, your foolishness about the fruit of male leadership?

Sorry, but it's always better to be OBEDIENT than to SACRIFICE!
AND in order to DO God's commands, you must first KNOW God's commands.

And about Debraoah, she was a judge, who ruled over civil matters regarding the nation. If we are to do church, we must abide by the LORD'S commandments He gave Paul.

Again, be obedient. Stop walking in yuur flesh. If you sow to the flesh, you will reap through the flesh CORRUPTION.

There are many women pastors out there. If you wanna talk about the fruit of male leadership, why not open your blinded eyes, and search your blackened heart to see the rotten fruit of female pastors, their impact to effeminize men, support homosexuality, their lies and false doctrine because of their nature to be deceived, their pride to do things their way, their push to equate emotional with spiritual growth, the lust of their eyes and the flesh, and I can go on.
