Should Churches Display The American Flag In Their Sanctuaries?

Reader to fly or not to fly? That is the question of the day! This coming July 4th weekend, many churches in our nation will choose to honor America during the worship service. Some will include America-centered songs, military-oriented hymns, and perhaps recitation of the pledge of allegiance. Others will honor those in attendance who served in the military. A few churches will preach sermons equating America of today with Israel of old: God’s chosen nation. The vast majority will display the American flag.

I love the USA and I love my country, but when I enter a sanctuary, my concern and focus should be spiritual in nature, not political. With exception on a Memorial day service and military funerals. I'm  against flags, or national symbols of state in the worship space. I feel that it is a confusing symbol that leads to a "patriotic" brand of Christianity that implies there is something patriotic about being Christian and vice versa.

This article outlines why.

  1. Amen. We should respect our country yes. However for some reason some people may choose not to love their own country, yet they can love Jesus. Its rare but it happens. Also We should pray for our leaders for a peaceful life as the Bible commands, however Jesus should be the center.

Some years ago I was attending a church. I am respectful, but I was getting annoyed. I asked the Pastor, "Are we here to study the Bible or the Constitution?". He wasn't amused.

  2. NO CHURCH SHOULD DISPLACE AN AMENDMENT FLAG NOR SHOULD THEY PLAY OR SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. AND AFRICAN AMERICANS SHOULDN'T CELEBRATE THE FOURTH OF JULY EITHER. THE AMERICAN FLAG IS NOT ABOUT GOD NOR HIS SON JESUS CHRIST. NEITHER THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. THEY REPRESENT THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. AFRICAN AMERICANS WEREN'T FREE TO HAVE THE LIFESTYLE THEY WANTED THEY WERE IN SLAVERY AND BONDAGE. THESE SAME WHITE EVANGELICALS THAT LOVE THE AMERICAN FLAG AND THE NATIONAL ANTHEM ALSO ARE RACIST AND PROUD OF THETE RACISM. THE NATIONAL ANTHEM IS A SONG ABOUT SLAVERY YES THEM WANTING TO KEEP THERE SLAVES. AFRICAN AMERICANS WEREN'T FREE FROM SLAVERY WHEN THE FOURTH OF JULY WAS COMMISSIONED. THESE WHITE EVANGELICALS TRY TO BE SO DEEP IN THERE WALK WITH GOD. YET THEY ARE SO PROUDLY OPEN TO SUPPORT A PRESIDENT THAT PROMOTES HATRED, STRIFE, EVILNESS AND WICKEDNESS, BIGOTRY, RAPE,NARRISST AND BIPOLAR DISORDER BEHAVIOR, WHOREMONGER AND TRAITOR. WE GO TO OUR HOUSES OF WORSHIP TO WORSHIP AND GIVE PRAISES TO OUR FAMILIES JESUS CHRIST. AND TO HEAR THERE IS A WORD FROM THE LORD. THERE'S NOTHING PATRIOTIC ABOUT BEING A CHRISTIAN. AFRICAN AMERICANS LEADERS SHOULD KNOW BETTER THAN TEACHING FOOLISHNESS LIKE IT IS. THE devil is a LIAR and a deciver to. AIN'T NOBODY GOD BUT GOD.

    1. If people really knew the truth about the flag most would stop worshipping it.
