Can someone explain the difference between a pastor who "steals tithes" & a pastor who blows the church money on dumb stuff? A south Georgia pastor will spend more than two years in prison after prosecutors said he stole donations from his own church and pocketed them for six years. In my opinion, all he had to do was be open and honest with the congregation and tell them "the spirit moved me to go to Victoria Secrets, Amen?!" Not really sure what makes this man worse other than not being openly honest with his followers.

  1. I left a church after 20 something years because every month, the elders (or leaders) would take up an offering for pastor. They wanted a minimum of $500 for pastor's birthday and his wife when it was her birthday. When the church anniversary came they wanted a minimum of a THOUSAND DOLLARS. They wanted $500 minimum for pastor appreciation month. During CHRISTMAS, they wanted us to bless the man of God. This was not including the building fund projects they wanted weekly. My ex-pastor even said that when the man of God was blessed then the sheep would be blessed. He explained that the anointing trickled down to the members.

ONE DAY, Pastor announced that he wanted a specific kind of Mercedes Benz. It was the latest model. He said at home that he prayed about it and THE LORD TOLD HIM TO PRESENT HIS REQUEST BEFORE THE CONGREGATION. He said, I'll tell the elders the specific make and model and color, and he expected the car by a certain amount of time.

That was it! He was using our hard-earned tithes and offerings to upgrade his ride. And my family was struggling financially. And in my former church we tithed off the gross not the "net." I don't have a problem blessing the man or woman of God but I had to leave.

    2. @ Walker,

      Mmmmh!

I too left a church where we were asked to bless the pastor and his wife with a Mediterranean cruise round trip fare for their wedding anniversary.

    3. @Shepherd, Let them pay for that cruise themselves!

    4. I think 500 for your Pastor(total) is not a huge amount of money. Unless you meant each.

    5. We have to be careful. If the Pastor is putting the work and and the congregation feels inclined, cool. However nothing must be done by compulsion. On the flip side, we mustn't be stingy and slight our leaders simply because of conmen out there.

    6. @Anonymous who wanted to know, that was $500 EACH (per) member! and we had 200 members who showed up regularly on Sundays. I was raised in that church as a child and it took 20 years for me to leave. And Leroy Thompson was the most favorite special guest.

    7. @Anonymous. The gall of these people. Not even the best parents demand gifts from their kids. Its not the money, its the principle of coercion. wow.

  2. This only happens in churches where the pastor has too much power. There should be an elected church board and agreed to bylaws that approve & govern spending. Pastor's birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays should be used as an opportunity to bless others who are less fortunate. Isn't the premise of Christianity to deny yourself and use your talents be of service to someone else?

  3. This only happens in churches where stupid people attend and they "surrender their brains" at the church door.

    I call them, zombie members.

    1. All these preachers teaching the false doctrine of tithing Better repent.. People are deceived!! Jesus said give to the poor and the widows.. I was a faithful Tither until I studied the word and became a student of Jesus Christ.. I love giving. But I will not pay tithe anymore.

    2. I love the fact that you took it upon yourself to study the word on your own. Too many Christians become lazy and are content to have their pastor interpret the Bible for them. I know because I was one of those lazy Christians. At one point I was so confused listening to various preachers all with their own interpretation of the scripture that I had no choice but to go in the word for myself and ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom. Tithing was one of those confusing topics. I paid faithfully because my pastor said that's what God commanded. I heard another minister say tithing didn't apply to today so I stopped. Once I started reading for myself I found Matthew 23:22-24 and it confirmed to me what I should do in regards to tithing.

  4. HE ISN'T THE FIRST AND HE WON'T BE THE LAST. THESE PREACHERS AND BISHOPS AND WHATEVER ELSE TITLE'S THEY WANT TO HAVE. BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE GOD AND LORD OVER PEOPLE'S. THEY BELIEVE THE CHURCH IS THERE PERSONAL FINANCIAL INSTITUTION. THEY WANT WANT WHEN THEY WANT IT AT ANY COST. THEY FAIL TO REALIZE THAT SALVATION IS A LIFESTYLE NOT A CAREER. THAT THEY SHOULD WORK ON A JOB. THEY PUT EVERYONE IN HELL THAT DOESN'T AGREE WITH THEM. WITH TOUCH NOT MY ANOINTED. THEY DON'T WANT TO GET ON A SALARY. THEY PUT WHO THEY WANT ON THE TRUSTEE BOARD.THEY JUST BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE GOD .

  5. This is what can happen when your pastor has no oversight, accountability and complete control of the finances of the church.

He can use YOUR TAX EXEMPT TITHES to buy anything he pleases.
He can pay for child care for a single mother,
Or buy his wife $3,000 dollars worth of underwear.

No Pastors should be using the church donations as a second income.

They SHOULD be handle by someone or preferably a group of people to prevent thinks like this.

But churches don't learn until all the money is gone and pastor is driving a Bentley
