Pastor John Piper: “If you believe in Jesus today, it’s because God chose you in eternity past. That’s not an ambiguous teaching in the Bible.”

Reader you the person reading this have most likely heard preached from a pulpit somewhere in America the following:

"God chose you before the foundation of the world."

God chose us, we did not choose Him. "You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit--fruit that will last--and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you." - John 15:16. This is a great biblical truth that with a correct perspective, frees the believers to share their faith, instead of crippling them for fear of saying something wrong and influencing another to hell.

Anyway, so what does this really mean? Well Pastor John Piper answer this in a video upload on Facebook which has set off a fire storm of a debate among his followers.  This is a very difficult doctrine for us, as humans.

  1. Miss Ann,

John 15:10 requires us to keep God's commandments in order for us to abide in his love.

Piper is building hype on verse 16 only (like most preachers these days). But we have to work hard to maintain this appointment.

The whole WORD of God should be looked at in totality. God created us for his pleasure (Revelation 4:11l) and he sets the tone (John 14:15). His love is conditional after all!

Obey and keep his commandments, and you'll be just fine (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

    1. You can't lose your salvation once you have it and you can't choose to love GOD only if he choose you first. We are all born SINNERS so we of ourselves could NEVER seek Jesus but if CHOOSEN then those choose will RECEIVE Him. Everyone going to hell wasn't choose by GOD and He didn't choose them bc he knows all past present future so he already KNEW they would reject him. It is a hard teaching but it is true and biblical. Some ppl were made for glory some for hell just like Paul said. GOD decided to do it that way so we who are only clay in the potters hands can't complain.

    2. Sorry, the Bible says to .."Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling" Philippians 2:12

If salvation is a sure bet then why the admonishment to even work on it? "Fear and trembling" means that you could lose your destiny and go to hell.

    3. Thank you Tooprotected.

Not sure why some individuals are so fixated on the "once-saved-always-saved" false phrase and yet they have NO scriptural backing.

      SMH!

    4. Don't get it wrong, there are plenty of scripture to support once saved always saved, I'm just tired of posting them. just like you can go to the Bible and find scriptures to support your views that one can lose their salvation once they are saved...In which don't believe scripture supports that thought....I'm going to say it once again, we can make the Bible say and support anything we want it to support.

    5. Let me make this clear as possible, leave it alone. I support and believe that one cannot lose their salvation, in other words I believe once saved always saved. In John 10:28-30, Jesus says not Paul, “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. I and the Father are one." The forgiveness of God through Christ is sufficient to cover all of our sins -- past, present, and future. There is nothing a person can do that God cannot forgive. This doctrine is supported by Romans 8:38-39, Ephesians 4:30, and Jude 24; among others. This is what I believe, I'm not asking you are no one else to support my position are believe in what I believe.

    6. Many thanks Miss Ann,

I would let this go too, in a minute.

Until we understand what is required of us by God I will continue (in love) this discussion.

If you noticed I asked for a couple of Chapters and NOT verses. Because I know verses are a piece of a whole chapter.

You quoted John 10:28-30. But the 27th verse talks of the sheep that hear Jesus' voice and he knows his sheep and they follow him. So we need to hear and follow our LORD and saviour so that we are safe and not plucked out of his hand like the subsequent verses indicate.

Romans 8:1 talks of no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus and walk NOT after the flesh. Verses 6 & 9 talk of being carnally minded leading to death and that righteousness is fulfilled in those who walk not after the flesh.

Ephesians 4:1 urges us to walk worthy of the vocation wherewith we are called. "...put off concerning the former conversation the old man which is corrupt... And be renewed in the Spirit... And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness." Ephesians 4:22-24. So Ephesians 4:30 requires us not to grieve the Holy Spirit which means that our continual causing of the grief of the Holy Spirit has consequences. Verse 31-32 details on how we should avoid grieving the Holy Spirit.

Jude 3, requires us to earnestly contend for the faith. Which means we could easily lose it. Verse 6 talks of angels that lost their first estate, and the 11th verse talks of those who have gone in the way of Cain, those who have ran greedily after the error of Balaam and those who perished in the gainsaying of Core. Verse 21 urges us to keep ourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our LORD Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

As believers we shouldn't sit back and assume that since we have been saved, we can't lose our salvation. That's the devil's snare.

Our continual sanctification comes from the whole WORD of God because it's TRUTH (John 17:17). And NOT what pieces of it we believe or not.

    7. Ann I believe as you do, and this person is a "Troll." I believe that once a person is authentically redeemed, is truly in Christ, that person will never be lost to Christ. That person has what we call eternal security—not because of the person’s innate ability to persevere, but I believe that God promises to preserve His own and that we have the benefit of our Great High Priest who intercedes for us every day. Now, at the same time, Christians are capable of gross and heinous sin. They’re capable of very serious falls away from Christ. They’re capable of the worst kind of denial and betrayal of our Lord. Consider, for example, Exhibit A—the apostle Peter, who denied Jesus with cursing. He was so emphatic that he uttered profanities to underscore the fact that he never knew Jesus. If you talk about somebody who didn’t seem to want to repent and who had turned away from Jesus, Saint Peter is your classic example. Yet his fellow disciple Judas also betrayed Jesus and turned away from Him, and of course, both of the betrayals were predicted by Jesus at the Last Supper. When Jesus spoke of Judas, He said, “What you have to do, do quickly. Go.” And He dismissed him to his treachery. He mentioned in the Scripture that Judas was a son of perdition from the beginning. I think it’s clear in Jesus’ High Priestly prayer that He understood Judas was never a Christian. So Judas’s betrayal was NOT the case of a Christian turning on Christ. When He announced to Peter that Peter would also betray Him, He said to him, “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked for you. He would have you and sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you so that your faith should not fail; and when you turn, strengthen the brethren.” And then Peter says, “Oh no, Lord, not me. I’ll never betray you.” Then, of course, he did. But notice that when Jesus predicted it, He said, “When you turn”—not, “If you turn” but “When you turn, strengthen the brethren.”
Because Jesus had prayed as He did in His High Priestly prayer, no one would be able to snatch His people out of His hand."
