Church News: Pastor Dennis Meredith An Affirming Pastor Becomes Bishop Of A Once Traditional Black Church.
Reader Bishops are the exception rather than the rule with black Baptists, but over the past couple of years, some Baptist churches have elevated pastors to bishops, citing biblical precedent and their ministers' influential leadership. Bishops already are incorporated in historically black denominations such as the Church of God in Christ and the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Last weekend Atlanta's Tabernacle Baptist Church consecrated its first ever gay affirming bishop Pastor Dennis Meredith.....Atlanta’s Tabernacle Baptist Church, is home to many of the city’s LGBT Christians.
I am having an extremely hard time understanding why becoming a Bishop is so popular amongst non denominational churches? There is no biblical based for the title. Anyway, Sunday, Tabernacle Baptist Church broke with Baptist tradition to consecrate the Rev. Dennis Meredith as bishop, the first in the congregation's 100 plus year history. As Meredith laid prostate on the floor bishops from a variety of denominations, including Pentecostal, laid hands on him, ratifying his spiritual authority as bishop.
