Christian Cussing, Swearing, & Profanity Is It A Matter Of Opinion?

Reader, cussing, swearing, and profanity is it a matter of opinion, when it comes to the Christian? Is cussing, swearing, and profanity a sin according to Scripture? While some Christians seems to think it is no matter what  society says or accepts why other Christians think not.

Last year, Christian Hip-hop Artist, Andy Mineo was under fire after his twitter rants over Christians who don't take kindly to profanity/swearing/cussing as he seemingly does not think it's much of a big deal. Were Christians justified in bashing the Reach Records artist on twitter for holding such a view?

The apostle Paul tells us to “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers” (Ephesians 4:29). We are again warned by Paul to “put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth” (Colossians 3:8). In the Greek language, the phrase, “filthy communication” means foul speaking, low and obscene speech.

What's your thought, is it wrong for Christians to cuss?

  1. It's not a matter of opinion. It's what does the Word say! Your scriptures just stated. Homeboy needs to get into his Word.

  3. Peter had a cussin' problem, but after he got filled with the Holy Spirit that mess went away. Put me on record for saying this. The media age we're in now, I called it that the d-word and s-word will no longer be beeped out and the networks will let it go. That's happening now. Satan controls the airwaves. He doesn't? Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Just watch, the F-word will be allowed in TV as if it's just everyday talk. That's how the world is talking now. Now I'm not talking to those who are 30 and under, lol. I'm 44, but I so remember the day when someone would hop in your car and they'd start talking and then a word would slip and they'd immediately apologize. Ya'll remember that? No more. Satan is on a rampage. Aside from the scriptures that plainly state we are to use words that are to edify us and others, I remember those Holy Ghost camp meetings and I'd literally see individuals possessed and demons gettin' cast out, but before that, what was that demon doing. Cussin' Yep. If demons cuss, Lord knows I don't want anything to do with it because besides, that's what's going on in hell right now as we speak, smh. Now you'll never hear that nowadays in the pulpits. It's not just the gnashing of teeth.

  4. Miss Ann,

Obviously Mineo is not a reader of the WORD of God (Psalm 19, 119). In addition to the scriptures above, he should know that the WORD of God washes (John 13:10, Ephesians 5:26) and sanctifies (John 17:17). In Christ we are new creatures (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Mineo, therefore, has no wisdom, knowledge, understanding, life and he isn't preserved for eternity. Anyone who thinks that praying for this young man whose daily purpose is to cuss and assume it is ok needs to review God's WORD regarding each one of us needing to strive to enter God's kingdom and to daily deny ourselves, pick up our respective crosses and follow Christ. No need to waste prayers on a certified wicked man pretending to be Christian. His actions do speak LOUDER than any words in form of excuses one might have.

    Be ye separate!

    2. "I tell you that every idle word that men speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgement." (Matthew 12:36).

    3. And your point is............... lol
Quit using these scriptures that are completely irrelevant to the topic at hand.

    4. I'm sorry!

I thought with all the testimonies and scripture quoted above (including Miss Ann's) I thought there would be a sense of maturity (1 Corinthians 13:11) on your part to get understanding (Proverbs 4:7) to know what is good and acceptable of God (Romans 12:2).

All long hoping it wouldn't be a pearls before swine situation (Matthew 7:6).

  5. I agree with Andy Mineo on this one. I think context of words matters. If I said that was a damn good basketball game does that mean I am not a Christian because I use the word damn.

  6. So I say the d,f and s word all the time. I don't see anything wrong with it because who made these a curse word? Prolly some white Pedophile. Cuss words are subjective so I see nothing wrong with it

  7. When I slip and cuss, I feel extremely remorseful and have to go to the Father and repent. I want the Holy Spirit to dwell in me. I don't need profanity to get my point across. We are to speak edification. We aren't supposed to allow no corrupt communication. I cannot understand how any Christian would think swearing is okay regardless of the context. As we grow in the Lord and spend time with Him, we realize how sinful we truly are and how much we don't want to grieve the Holy Spirit. Spending time with Jesus, changes you on the inside. Your daily life changes even when you mess up, you repent.

    1. Who told you what words are cuss words tho? These are regular words like bus, car, truck. Etc. so if someone tells you to that "van" is a cuss word what you gon do?

  8. So then why aren't you using the...as you say, the f word or the s word or the d word here? Why because you know its wrong and you are trying to make it right. No scripture needed just good morale judgement.

    4. Exactly and that's because it is considered vulgar. If you use that type of language then that's your business but it don't make it right. consider this...if you have young children is it OK for them to speak to you using those type of words? How about to your mom Or how about using that type of language in the place you call church? Is it OK for your child to use that language towards their teacher and then after all that...say they are a Christian.

    5. Haha, thanks Anonymous for not cussing.

    7. Ms. Ann, I thought you put a disclaimer out there saying we can't go by the name "Anonymous?"

  9. Curse words are not subjective, they are words with a definition and a meaning just like other "regular" words and are considered vulgar. They are often used as an expression of anger or to cause pain. This is not rocket science and the origin of where they came from or "who" made them curse words is irrelevant.

God created this world by speaking, and what He spoke came into being. Words create and can be used for good or evil. Words are not just innocent bystanders of language, they have power. Sorry for my tone, that post minimizing curse words got me a little upset. Hey, but at least I didn't cuss.
