Harlem Church Opens Mental Health Center To Help Address The Stigma That Plagues The Black community!!

Reader sometimes people ask what is the church doing for the community that supports it....well.....THIS! First Corinthian Baptist Church in Harlem, New York has taken a major step forward in an effort to address the mental health stigma that plagues the Black community.  On Thursday, the place of worship opened the HOPE Center, a new facility that will provide affordable mental health care services for individuals in the neighborhood. New York City First Lady Chirlane McCray, local leaders, and residents were in attendance for the ribbon cutting ceremony.

“Today, we take a step toward healing and empowering our community by providing access to inexpensive, quality mental health counseling right here in Harlem,” said Rev. Michael A. Walrond Jr., Senior Pastor at First Corinthian Baptist Church, in a statement. “Getting help should not be taboo – in fact, it is the first step toward realizing one’s full potential. I look forward to welcoming New Yorkers through the doors of the HOPE Center.”

  1. Lady Brock, Thank you very much for having the courage to do this article. It is much needed for the Black Christian Community. Every Black Church needs to WAKE UP OUT OF SLEEP. Mental Illness is not a JOKE. It can't be shouted out, layed hands out, speaking in tongues out, tarrying out. There's nothing wrong with getting some Professional Psychological Help. Don't get me wrong . With GOD All Things Are Possible. But if GOD didn't want folks to get help in certain area's of our lives HE wouldn't have given certain talent's. Accountant's, Judge's, Physicians etc. Black pastor's have always had a control like no other person over there congregations. They are like God's to some folks they do no wrong. Whatever they say the folks do. It's time out for foolishness. If you know someone that needs help you needs to make sure that they get help. Before it's to late. Yes I am a .Black Woman.Who happens to be a Christian. Who happens to be. A Mental Health Counselor. Who also goes to counseling myself. I am not exempt.

  3. And the biggest "mental health issue" within the black community that sadly is being accepted as okay is "HOMOSEXUALITY". I wonder if they will address this one, better known as "sin and abomination"! The women in the pic looks straight up lesbian to me!
