Church Announcement: Don't Come For Bishop Jakes!

Reader, Bishop Jake's clapped back at one of his many followers yesterday after the bishop posted the above photos on Instagram. A follower lashed out saying that he supposed to be leading by example and not wearing ripped jeans to the altar as it is worldly.

    1. I don't understand the controversy. We should be listening to the message, not enforce fashion.

      Delete
    2. Jakes the one enforcing fashion...why else would he dress this way? No one would ever say anything if the bishop was in a suit. You just don't get it, do you?

      Delete
    3. You really don't get it, do you? JAKES IS THE ONE TRYING TO ENFORCE FASHION, a FASHION like the way the people of the WORLD dresses!!!

    4. HOW Dare YOU JUDGE PEOPLE BASED ON THEIR LOOKS OR JEANS ,THIS IS THE ISSUE WITH THE HUMAN HEART WE FAIL TO SEE BEYOND CLOTHES,THATS WHY WHEN SAMUEL CAME TO LOOK FOR A NEW KINg AFTER SAUL God told him he looks at de heart UNLIKE MAN and SAMUEL picked david GODS CHOICE WHO LOOKED NOTHING LIKE A KING. AT DE END GOD CALLED David A MAN AFTER HIS OWN HEART, " judge not so ye not be judged'

    5. You too missed the point...Let's go over it again...the young man asked Jakes about Jakes as a leader setting an example in his dress. And Jakes gave a smart alect response saying he missed the scripture about wearing jeans in the pulpit. You like a lot who commented here want to pass judgment on those who disagree with Jakes outfit and say dress is a matter of the heart. Dressing should be a matter of the heart but Jakes did not respond that way. He clapped back with a Lil attitude. The way Jakes responded makes me question his leadership in this case, just like the guy question his leadership about his dress.

    1. Scripture, please?? I'm definitely using that! LOL!!

    2. For real, you are talking about a man of God wearing jeans in the pulpit, it's not his job to dress like you think he should, it's his job to get people saved healed and delivered which he has done. Guess I must have missed the jeans scripture also!!!!

      Delete
    3. I think that this is a more of a culture issue than a spiritual one. White pastors wear jeans in the pulpit all the time, and this question has never come up. As a whole, white congregations dress a lot more casually than do predominantly black congregations. I think black folks just prefer to see their leaders in suits or religious "preachers' robes. And there is nothing wrong with that.......But think about it. Jesus probably had holes in his clothes, so BAM. If this is their only issue with TD Jakes, then that's pretty sad.

    4. NO...show you how much (or little) you know. Many have lots of problems with Jakes besides his raggedy jeans. The main one is his preaching a God, not the God of the Bible as He does not believe in the TRINITY. Go do some apologetic study on this dude.

      Delete
    5. I guess someone should ask for scripture on the Trinity. There's no mention of trinity or jeans in the Bible.

      Delete
    6. Look CD Joe, I’ve read some of your quirky posts and am convinced you believe in some mysterious god. First let me say this right off the bat, the word “Trinity” is not in the Bible. That’s a given and all Christians should know this. But when you read the Bible in its entirety, one can not help but to note with just a little bit of common comprehension and a lot of the Spirit’s teaching, the Bible reveals God “ one God who exists simultaneously in three persons”. Each is coequal, copowerful, and coeternal with the other. Each person--Father, Son and Holy Spirit--is not the other. Without either there is no God.

There are tons of verses in the Bible that speaks to God being a triune being. Verses like the following tells us there is but ONE GOD:

"Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!" (Deut. 6:4)
"I am the LORD, and there is no other; Besides Me there is no God." (Isa. 45:5)
There is no God but one. (1Cor. 8:4)

And verse like (John 14:16-17, 23) shows a distinction of the persons in the ONE Godhead

Jesus speaking to His disciples] "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you." ... "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and make Our abode with him."

JESUS speaking to THE FATHER, giving a helper, the SPIRIT of TRUTH.
It is JESUS who loves, The FATHER loves, WE (JESUS and the FATHER who will come)…

      And verses like Luke 1:35
And the angel answered and said to her [Mary], "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy offspring shall be called the Son of God."

THE Holy Spirit, THE power of the MOST HIGH, called the Son of God (Jesus).

And as far as your concern with jeans in the Bible, like I said earlier, Jakes was the one wearing the raggedy thing. He should tell us where in the Bible it’s okay for him as a bishop to do so. Maybe you can help out since you seem to believe it’s okay. And don’t give me any bologna saying “he has to be like the world to reach the world” either. The Bible says we are not to be like the world and the “world is an enemy” to God.

      As a bishop, Jakes must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach; not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;

Not silly in his look to be “relevant”.

AND FOR THOSE WHO WOULD TELL ME TO “SHUT UP”, DON’T COME AFTER ME…that includes you WAR VETERAN and POTTY MOUTH…

  4. AMAZING...young guy asked a question, a good one may you, about setting an example as a leader. And this is the response given by the "great" bishop and teacher. WOW!!!You are right. Jakes "clapped" back. That was all he did. This "great" bishop and teacher responded like a smart alec, as opposed to addressing the young man's question like a Christian leader should. Jakes should have been ready to give an answer for the hope that lies within him. He had to have known somewhere in the back of his brain, someone would at least think this type dress is inappropriate for a church leader. Says a lot about the "bishop" if you ask me.

  6. It's a shame black unarmed men are being murdered everyday in this country and church folk are worried about what somebody is wearing. There is nothing wrong with what this man is wearing. Petty, misguided made up issues like this only serve to divide and keep our minds and efforts off of real issues that desperately need our attention. Meanwhile, people are continuing to suffer. Did Jesus do this sort of thing?

  7. Bishop is dressed ok. However, I know many churches that would not allow him to minister in jeans. Its absolutely ridiculous how the Black church is obsessed with dress code. A 3 piece suit does not make you holy or qualified.

  8. NOW…NOW..NOW…I’m about to take ya’ll to school…

OLD TESTAMENT: The LORD spoke to MOSES His detailed commands how the priests should adorn themselves - the red and purple and scarlet, every fine construct of their dress and attire as they entered His Presence in His Holy place for worship and oblation. God Himself instructed they would decorate in ornaments of beauty, because He only approve of worship in beauty and holiness. What a marvelous attitude the priest would bring, being obedient to garnish themselves as instructed by God in their outward appearance. Their obedience (even in the details of their dress) was more important than their sacrifices.

NEW TESTAMENT: Paui talked about women and how they should adorn themselves in modest apparel. And before any of you skeptics accuse Paul of being misogynistic, He did this because women were being too “revealing” in their attire. And as a matter of fact, Paul had a great appreciation and respect for women because his admiration for women was extraordinary, as he admonished women to strive for a higher beauty, an inward beauty, a godly beauty. And for the silly claim that some of us are misguided in our focus paying attention to minor details of what one wears as opposed to the social ills of society, what better example we have than from the apostle himself as he wrote under the influence and power of the Holy Spirit. Paul WHOSE VERY OWN PERSONAL LIFE (not the killing of those around him – although he preached against murderers and thieves and liars and DIED FOR HIS MESSAGE) was in danger as he was stoned, beaten, appeared before magistrates and kings THOUGHT IT IMPORTANT TO ADDRESS MODESTY IN ATTIRE. WE AS CHRISTIANS SHOULD NOT ONLY DRESS LIKE THE WORLD, BUT SHOULD ADDRESS “DRESS” , especially as it pertains to MODESTY. The young man challenged JAKES, and rightfully so.

YOU TESTAMENT: You who come on this post to minimize the ideal of dress in the church. YOU who I bet would take your time to make sure your make up is in place just to go to the corner store or the mall. You who when you dress to go to church put your personal emphasis on what you would wear, how you would wear it, how you would look and perceive how others see your look. You who would make sure you adorn yourself in your most eloquent outfit when attending a funeral or a wedding would be so flippant and glib in your comments to say that “others put too much emphasis on clothing when THEY COME TO GOD HOUSE TO WORSHIP IN THE PRESENCE OF THE ALMIGHTY”. YOU HYPOCRITE!!! YOU ALL REALLY NEED to “GET A GRIP”…
Someone once said “when there is no dress code or a lack of dress code in church, there is a lack of worship going on there”. I think there is some merit to this saying. CAN I get an AMEN, Ms. APRIL ROSS...

    2. Clothes don't make a true man (or woman) of God, a heart for the Lord does. I'm glad on Judgement Day Jesus won't be judging us for what we chose to wear to Church. Our Pastor and most of us wear jeans to Church. We are there to praise and worship the Lord not to be judged on our fashion abilities. We want others who may be living on the street to be able to come in and feel welcomed not feel like they can't be there because they don't have money to buy the "right" clothes.

      Delete
    3. No...You should want to be an example for others who come off the streets, so that they too would want to give their best to the Master by letting them see you give your best. Even if they can't afford, God can provide. But we are not teaching God can provide in this respect. We just go along and dumb down to the sinners to make them comfortable. That's what's wrong with the church today. God gave us His best. We should stay away from anything "casual" as we usher into His presence.

    4. Please shut the hell up. You just pull shit out of your ass! You are a busy body and have started all of this mayhem. Dress like a Mormon and have a black heart and judgmental... Does not equate to Christlike. How do you know this guy is of the streets..... For all I know you could be the same person masking comments. Are you retired? How about marching for a cause. Save your self righteous indignation for Freddie Gray, Tamir Rice, Travon Martin and others gunned down unjustly.

    5. WOW potty mouth. Your filthy speech does not equate to Christlikeness. I am surprised Ann allowed your profane comment to go through. There is a scripture that states in James 4:29 "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers". Maybe you should memorize that verse and hide it in your heart.

Your obvious rage is interfering with your comprehension. I never said the guy was off the streets. I was responding to Gina Rabsatt comment when she said " We want others who may be living on the street to be able to come in and feel welcomed not feel like they can't be there because they don't have money to buy the "right" clothes." Really not that difficult to follow.

You really have no need to know about my work / retirement status. I don;t know you, really by the sound of you, am not interested in getting to know you. Don't send a reply on me / you getting to know one another. You seem like you would miss my main point and do just that.

You can not judge to question that because I disagree with Jakes outfit, that I am not marching for any causes either. You are coming across as one who lacks diplomacy.

    5. Jakes the one that's wearing it. Raggedy jeans that looks a size too small and all...where is his verse to say that it's okay for Him as a leader to dress this way? That's all the young man was asking...Since you seem to be in his corner and his answer was inept, maybe you can help out...

      Delete
    6. Although there is no scripture in the Bible that tells a pastor how to dress, there is scripture that supports doing things decently and in order. We, as Christians, should be more concerned with how our dress may distract one from hearing the Word of God. YES, SOMEONE'S ATTIRE CAN BE A DISTRACTION! No one knows how his/her speech, dress, walk, or anything else for that matter may influence another. As the old adage goes: You may be the only Bible that someone else reads; so why not dress to give God the best? How old is Jakes anyway? He is too old to be dressing like a twenty something year old...and we sometimes wonder why we, as older adults, don't get much respect.

  10. Bishop sure wasn't complying with the Word when he wrote his book on being led by your instinct. Scripture please for being led by your instinct? I thought born-again, Holy Ghost filled Christians were led by the Holy Spirit. The young man was right. What he had on was un-becoming for a man his age, and it didn't fit his stature as a leader.

  11. Why must you come to church with a three piece suit and dressed to the nines to hear the word. This is why some not all people don't come to church because they feel they have to dress up hat and all. That is how they dressed when I was growing up and I hated it then. Not everyone can dress like that. The church I go to and have been going to for years my Pastor wears jeans and so does the rest of us. I can't find anywhere in the bible that says you have to dress a certain way. Jesus said come as you are. Getting the word and understanding the word is what is important not how one dresses.

    ReplyDelete

    1. REALLY?, people don't come to church because they feel they have to dress up in hat? ARE YOU SERIOUS?

REALLY? You HATED going to church because people dressed up? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? If you really hated... I mean...hated going to church...it couldn't be because people dressed up. NOW go back and think about it, and tell us the real reason you HATED going to church.

NOT everyone can dress like what? Steve Harvey suits to the nines? Most churches now a days do not require this type dress code. Most churches allow for "casual" dress. No one have to tell folks to dress up to go to a funeral a wedding a club. But just so happen many like you find an excuse to hate dressing for church. REALLY?

You say and I quote “Getting the word and understanding the word is what is important not how one dresses” REALLY? Obviously you don’t believe that when you lied on Jesus saying “Jesus said come as you are.” REALLY? He never said such a thing. REALLY?

      You flunked, REALLY... D-))

With the jeans he wore, etc..etc.. Not that serious in my opinion...
