Kirk Franklin Apologizes To The LGBT Community For Homophobia In The Black Church.

Reader, Gospel musician Kirk Franklin had some powerful words to say about the church's relationship to gay people. In an interview to promote his new album "Losing My Religion," Kirk issue a public apology to the LGBT community for homophobia in the Black church.
via The Grio:
“I want to apologize for all of the hurtful and painful things that have been said about people in the church that have been talented and gifted and musical, that we’ve used and we’ve embarrassed… and all this other horrible crap that we’ve done,” Franklin said. “We have not treated them like people. We’re talking about human beings, men and women that God has created.” “The Bible is not a book that’s an attack on gay people,” he added. “It’s not a book written to attack gay people.” Overall, Franklin said he wants the LGBT community to realize that God is about grace and love. “It is horrible that we have made it where the Bible is a homophobic manual,” Franklin said. “That’s not what the Bible is. I mean you want to talk about things that God gets at… pride and jealousy and envy and arrogance. But what we also see is God sending his son to save us all, because we were all… straight, gay or whatever, lost and in need of a savior, and there’s room at the cross for all of us.”

Marsha I agree with Kirk. I remember being at church as a child watching a perceived gay choir director be publicly shamed and 'Sat Down' in front of the entire congregation. After church was over I overheard adults agreeing saying 'Yep he was just too flamboyant'. The same adults who were always shouting laps around the church. I was 13, and it left a bad taste in my mouth. That was the age "for me" that I started seeing the world for what it really was. I was so sad for him. My Mom explained that it's alright for me not to agree, and that we just have to keep on loving people but I never forgot that day, or that choir director.

    3. It's a shame that a man this old would try to act relevant in the company of sinners in need of salvation. For the sake of record sales, this man promoted the gospel of inclusion and totally ignored the fact that these guys interviewing him need Jesus.

When it comes to sharing the Gospel, I always believed that we should be biblical not relevant. First this man ducked all the questions, then he lied and said religion is bad. Correction Kirk, defiled religion is bad. Then he disrespected his mother and her husband. Shameful, I don't care if your mother abandoned you or not, you don't disrespect her. Yes, I could go on and on, but there is not enough room on this post. Contrary to popular belief, Kirk has no authority to apologize on behalf of the True church, he sold his soul so long ago and is no believer and He did not show God the reverence He deserved " Yo Pops or Dear Pops". That made my spirit man crawl. You, Mr. Franklin are dismissed, Franklin will never call homosexuality an abomination because his label mates are ones who deny the very Christ that came to deliver us.

  2. Ms. Ann, how in the hell this a black church issues? I've been to white churches who preach about homosexuality being a sin as well. Always trying to blame the black church.

    1. No one is saying that it's exclusive to the black church. This discussion and this blog just happen to specifically be about the black church. However, I do remember back in the 80's & early 90's the Catholic church went through the same issue during the height of the AIDS crisis. They preached against gays, encouraged parents to disown their dying gay children, wouldn't hold funerals for gays, and condemned them to hell. It was a sad state of affairs.

  3. This is so sad, people condemning people. Who left and made any of us God? Kirk, is right that the church should not condemn anyone! No human has the right to do the judging. Love is love, no matter the color or the gender. Jesus loves us all! Now, allow that to resonate......

  4. I been waiting on Kirk to come out the closet for years, I seen were he finally said the bible is a lie , after he has gotten rich, yelling and a hype man, he's also heavy heartEd about the way he treated Tamela Mann, and look how she and her husband still blessed, so he can take his porn addiction and go straight to hell, there will be plenty going with him.

  5. Hey Kirk. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh; Eph 5:31. Oh, I forgot, you interpret the Bible the way you want to? And uh, God ain't gone apology to nobody when the Book of Revelation totally fulfills itself. Dude, you need to realize we are at the end of days and this constant preaching of destiny, favor, harvest, purpose and blessing ain't the only thing in the Bible. There is a DEVIL and there is a HELL. Something that's rarely talked about today. KIRK, I guess you are cool with the gay activist that said that every hotel they visit, their goal is to rip out the Book of Romans if there's a Bible in the room. YOU WANNA APOLOGIZE FOR THAT!!!!???!!!! WAKE UP MAN..!!!! I pray for you and your family.

  8. I was raised Baptist, not COGIC, and went to church EVERY Sunday. It was very clear that many of the musicians and choir members were gay, yet never once did I hear my pastor preach against homosexuality, call anyone out, or make anybody feel unwelcome. It wasn't until I got older and started going to the Pentecostal churches with my aunt that I started to hear all of the extreme hatred towards gays, which was so strange since so many of the people in those churches were gay.

  9. You either stand by God's word or you don't. You cannot talk about Grace without talking about sin. I appreciate what he said regarding his marriage and the addiction he had and how his view on women needed a Godly upgrade. Quite sad if the only thing people take away from his 40 minute interview is what he said regarding sexuality. Black churches should not be singled out for such and such. All churches discuss sexuality. Kirk is wrong to assume that sexual sin amongst straight people is not discussed in church as it is a whole lo from the alter to the pew sitters. Those who go to church know this. Its spoken about a lot. It all comes under the same banner.

    1. You are ON POINT. YOU GET a strong A:))

All you hear now a days, is all this "pastor bashing" and "church bashing". Not to say there are not problems in the church. However, it's as though the devil uses so many to talk about some negative scandals in churches, and highlights these to leave an impression on those who are against "pastors" and "church" to fortify their excuses against God and the things of God.

Kinda remind me of how the media would sling bias against blacks, to leave a negative impression about blacks upon white folks and black folks alike, that all blacks are thugs. Or if you do have a young person struggling with his/her sexuality, Satan has programs and slick strategies in the schools, and other societal venues (even in some churches) to feed and tap into that desire of confusion to impress those young and old who are struggling with these sexual impulses.

Then you get this “dude Franklin” here, in his o so clever way, spouting apologies for “the church”, like he is some spokesperson, grossly misusing Scriptures, conducting himself not becoming to the faith because he feels he can because he is a “talented (not spiritual) musician and he has a “story”. He makes it seems like he is the chief of sinners, and from what I gather from the apostle Paul who coined the phrase, Paul testified of a Christ who he met on Damascus Road and died for his faith, knowing his life was a drink offering for the Savior. Paul ministered to sinners expounding their need was to live and die for the Savior, unlike Kirk who subtly “foolosophied” "Everybody is created to be something bigger that what they are…"

Many such folks have a sole agenda, attacking the church calling it homophobic, misogynistic, and a place of hypocrisy. Other such have taken on what they call “ministry”, just to isolate pastors teaching and receiving tithes and grooming women to satisfy their sexual appetites.

Truth is there are so many pastors whom the LORD has chosen for service. You don’t hear them talk about that. Reminds me of folks who defends black gospel junk music by Kirk and the likes, when there are tons of hymns and spiritual songs out there, they refuse to use in their worship towards God.

God is gonna get His work done, and He has gifted His people to do such, despite these naysayers. They are so many pastors who visit the sick, pray for many - of and not of his flock-, preach and teach the truth of Scriptures, perform funerals and encourage families in mourning, plant churches, serve as missionaries, serve on call of duties where there are other crisis, etc, etc, etc. And as far as the church goes, we know Christ says the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

The devil created this smokescreen because he is a DECEIVER. And if many are caught up in his smoke, he will eventually lead them to “the fire”, where they will burn for the rest of eternity.

    2. You're absolutely right, there are many great, selfless pastors who do right by their fellow man & honor God. But the church bashing comes from a place of hurt and isolation that many churches have placed on some of the members of their flock. Furthermore, when a few pompous black churches, from select denominations, decided to get involved in political matters surrounding the subject of homosexuality, they opened themselves & every other "black" church at large, up to intense analysis & criticism that you refer to as the smoke screen.

  10. What people don't understand ...God is not here to reform you. The 10 Commandments couldn't do it, and it was good, but only gave power to sin (not the action but the state of being).Sins are an issue but not the issue...sin is. If Christ came to establish morality - he could of just let many of the other religions handle it because some of them are more moral than Christians (some respect all life). Jesus came so that we could be reborn - His intent was to start a new species .... not just correct wrong behavior.

We concentrate on what what is supposed to be God's issue (only He can save - we are vessels - true, but I only use this keyboard when it's time...other than that, it's waiting for it's master to use it). At the end of the day an individual knows if they have a relationship and fellowship with the Lord or not. Like I heard some one say before - "you can put your hand down after the concert"!

Kirk was jumped on because people took a few quotes out of context. What I've seen is activity similar to the Pharisees of old. I waited before I made a decision, and after hearing the CD - Kirk is basically on point.

  11. Having listened to the full interview, I agree with Kirk Franklin on religiosity that's passes as Christianity. There's a huge difference in being cultish vs. having a saving relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

    ReplyDelete
  12. It has always been known even through the Old Testament that God wanted a relationship with His people; the reason He gave the nation of Israel all the Levitical laws which were foreshadows of His Son Jesus Christ, the seed to whom He promised to Abraham. When Christ came, He instilled as His teaching a new commandment I give thee. Then we know of the countless of words Paul wrote about the circumcision of the heart, that salvation is not of the law, but by grace through faith in the LORD Jesus Christ. These are all inspiration written by men as God led them to write. It has always been know the difference between religion and Christianity; that religion is man’s attempt to reach God (works oriented, Christianity is God intervened to reach man (faith based). The only illustration Kirk used to even simulate God’s love for mankind was the example of a person drowning, some walking by telling the drowning person to paddle, swim harder and Jesus diving in to save the drowning fellow. This was such a poor illustration to me the way he even addressed Jesus as “dude” and “hero”, titles never even close to the Person, the Messiah, The Christ, even as the disciples and The Writers of Scriptures would do. There is nothing Pharisee like honoring Christ this way at all. And a man drowning is by accident in most cases, whereas Jesus came to save men and women who are lost because they are BORN IN SIN. Kirk speaking is this way is not biblical at all. And he speaks with a weirdness, as indicated by even the title of his album “LOSING MY RELIGION” and songs like “Wanna Be Happy” (HAPPY a term, not compared to words used by God of scriptures like joy (Jesus, Others, Self) and contentment (as Paul would explain to mean being faithful and respectful to God no matter what situation he was placed in). If Kirk is truly saved, he shouldn’t have a “RELIGION TO LOSE”. Any attempt on Kirk’s part to be clever is foolishness. His way of reaching others to “lose their religion” and to “be happy” is ludicrous. Unsaved people need to know they are lost and are in need of a Savior. Saved people needs to know they should abide in the Vine, to grow in the LORD, to serve Him using the Gifts the Spirit of God gives them.

Now we see this “dude” Kirk saying he would proposing to take on an offer to a sinner to go to a strip club, if the sinner promises to come to church. What Kind of madness is THAT!! Of course some who call themselves Christians, would see nothing wrong with this, and will deem those who disagree as being a Pharisee.

The 40 minute interview by KIRK was totally blasphemous!! His references to God was DISRESPECTFUL!!. Yeah he did mentioned “the dude” Jesus, the “hero” Jesus, but what Kirk did throughout the entire interview was merely offered the skin of the truth (if he really offered any truth at all), stuffed with a bunch of lies. Lies like "Everybody is created to be something bigger that what they are…" He is "Worse broken dude…" "The Bible says the same thing about homosexuality the same way it does about heterosexuality…""The Bible says homosexuality is an abomination…no…no…no…""I’m alive to make God famous.. (what kind of IGNORANT STATEMENT IS THIS!!! KIRK silly lingo to be “fresh” is out of control and really proves his attitude about the LORD…KIRK CAN NOT MAKE GOD FAMOUS…GOD IS NOT SEEKING TO BE FAMOUS…and my statement here is not a religious one either…it is a biblical one based on my relationship with the LORD who has revealed these things through Scriptures…)
