Some folks are saying they knew it would be big, but could anyone have guessed this big? A universal Pictures’ adaptation of E L James’ Fifty Shades of Gray has dominated the worldwide box office since its rollout started on February 11 and has amassed an impressive $240 million so far!
The Sam Taylor-Johnson-directed film, starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, earned $81.7 million from 3,646 domestic theaters over the three-day portion of the four-day Presidents’ Day weekend (averaging $22,400 per theater) and has already reached $158 million internationally in 58 markets, the biggest international opening ever for an R-rated movie, beating previous record holder The Matrix Revolutions‘ $117 million. Fifty Shades of is also playing in 85 IMAX screens, which are expected to deliver $2.1 million for the long weekend.
