More Americans Say That You Can Be Good Without God?

Reader for the first time, a majority of Americans — 56 percent — say it is possible to be a good person without a religious belief. So says new Pew Research Center data drawn from two polls conducted among about 5,000 American adults in June and July. “God is not a prerequisite for good values and morality,” Greg Smith, Pew’s associate director of research, said in a post about the findings. ” … [T]he public’s increased rejection of the idea that belief in God is necessary for morality is due, in large part, to the spike in the share of Americans who are religious ‘nones.

Elizabeth Baptist Church Member and Deacon Fired From Job As Atlanta Fire Chief!

Atlanta, Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran has officially been fired as of Tuesday, Jan, 2015  by Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed for self-publishing a book, in which he argued that homosexuality was immoral, GA Voice reports.

In the book Cochran, whose a deacon and Sunday school teacher in his church, and a member of the Georgia Baptist Convention-affiliated Elizabeth Baptist Church in Atlanta.  Describes homosexuality and practices like bestiality and pederasty as “forms of sexual perversion” and describes same-sex relations as one of many “vile, vulgar and inappropriate ways” in which sinful men dishonor God.

  1. Based on this article, I don't think he should've been fired. However, I don't know the entire story & don't know if he broke a company rule or something.

    1. As a former Fire Fighter and Trans Woman I applaud Mayor Reed for taking the appropriate steps in this matter.

  2. For all who don't know the Mayor's office has gone to great lengths to make Atlanta a city inclusive of everyone. To have a member of his top brass to come along and try to undermine that in one day is shamful. Having a black man point his finger at a minority group is clearly point of interest that should be addressed by everyone.

    1. So Stanley Smith, apparently Mayor Kasim Reed "will not tolerate any discrimination of any kind" within his administration, except for discrimination against Christianity! Also, what the fire chief said was absolutely true and for that he needs to undergo brainwashing...I mean sensativity training?!

    2. If he was a pastor and not the fire chief, there would be no problem. People who hold public office are held to a strict code of conduct & ethics. The city could not allow him to voice such disdain for any segment of the population, doing so would make them liable to all sorts of lawsuites.

  3. This is sad that the Atlanta fire chief cannot publish a book about his beliefs, and share it with people he cares about. Bet nothing would be said of it was a Muslim book!

    1. This is life. If he was white and had published a book with racist beliefs, the same thing would've happened. Gays are a protected class of people just like minorities & people with disabilities. And his position as a public servant legally binds him into not having or expressing a discriminatory attitude towards any group. He should've just kept his personal views to himself.
