More Americans Say That You Can Be Good Without God?

Image
Reader for the first time, a majority of Americans — 56 percent — say it is possible to be a good person without a religious belief. So says new Pew Research Center data drawn from two polls conducted among about 5,000 American adults in June and July. “God is not a prerequisite for good values and morality,” Greg Smith, Pew’s associate director of research, said in a post about the findings. ” … [T]he public’s increased rejection of the idea that belief in God is necessary for morality is due, in large part, to the spike in the share of Americans who are religious ‘nones.

Update: Why Did The Pastor Of This Church "allowed" her to "enter" The Sanctuary Dressed Like A Harlot?

According to my Facebook time line, the above pic of the singer, Onlyone Harmony, singing at the Riverside Church in New York last night was posted to my timeline with the following question:  is this outfit appropriate for her to be singing in the church?

Facebook comment:
"I'm not shocked... This church is very huge and powerful in New York, founded by John D Rockerfella... This is one of their biggest ministries. " Maranatha, a ministry of The Riverside Church, is committed to serving God by fostering greater understanding while promoting equity for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Same-Gender Loving, and Allies. With these goals, we have organized our ministry to serve, advocate, and support the LGBT community"....You get the gist."
This is so out of line for me. The devil is working hard to destroy the ministry and effectiveness of God's church. If the church cannot, or does not, do her job millions upon million will die lost and the devil knows that is true.

Update: Folks are saying this was a fashion show and not a regular worship service, therefore Ms. Onlyone Harmony was not inappropriately dress and should not be judged for attire. That this is from a stage performance at that church and people were wearing several types of costumes. It was a theatrical show of some sort. That's why she's dressed that way.

The question for me, why would the church allow it venue to be used in this way?  I think it shows lack of respect for the church.

  1. Now see this is why the church need to have a dress code. When you can go to church to minister to God's ppl dressed like this, it makes you wonder.

    3. The explanation was given, it appears the church rented out their space for a fashion show, just as some churches rent space for parties and weddings with hip hop and rap music. This was not a Sunday church service. Get over yourselves ppl!

I so agree! seriously why is anyone shocked? What respect does the church have left when the same sex is head over the congregation? When pastors are doing with every member and I mean every ONE? When the parties are on tv making a fool and a mockery of themselves and what they stand for? Again I ask Why now ?

And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; and to those who were selling the doves He said, “Take these things away; stop making My Father’s house a place of business.” ~ John 2:14-16.

    3. I disagree, Moses. Ppl lost respect for the church before the airing of preachers of l.a. I will admit that the show does not help in promoting the church, in my opinion, as the preachers do not always conduct themselves in a godly manner. Although I no longer watch the show, I do not think it is fair to place so much blame for the actions of others on this one show alone when ppl have been acting unruly prior to the show's first season

Why do people do things outside of church but then come Sunday now they forget and pretend like they are now holier than thou. I think its inappropriate for a woman to dress like this inside or outside of church but you doubleminded people who think its okay in different locations are just as guilty and corrupted as her.

    1. Come on Donna Knight you can't be serious? The Christian Church is generally assumed or believed to be the case is a set aside place of worship for a Holy God. Beyonce and Nicki Minaj are secular entertainers who entertain in and for a secular world and audience. What do you mean doubleminded people?

      Delete

    4. Lord help us ! I feel like my eyes have been assaulted ! Only the ignorant and unlearned can agree with any so called Christian Pastor/Leader, who would allow someone to " perform " in the mist of ANY congregation (dress/not dressed) like this. We have to dress appropriate for Court/Work, so why do we even imagine that respect for the "House of God" should be any less? First of all, even a baby saint who has the Holy Spirit inside of them would know that you should put clothes on before going to church. But, hold-up, you don't even need to be saved/religious at all, to know that this is all wrong on so many levels. When Leadership is "fake", there will be immoral things taking place. Every building that calls itself a "church/Assembly ", is not a House of God. Also, how in the world can anyone compare the pulpit area of a local assembly to a secular arena where artist perform and entertain? There is absolutely no comparison at all, if it`s a real Christian Assembly. Anyone who agrees with this type of ungodly/corrupt presentation of self inside of any Christian assembly is the Devil`s child. Christ is Holy and if one doesn't feel they need to change ( Romans 12:2 ) and let " all things become new", (2nd Cor. 5:17 ) and after hearing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, is no Christian. You may be religious and love Christian music, but, if any one resist`s the " standard " of godliness set forth in the Word of God, then you are none of His. In these last days, when we see and hear of this ungodliness, just know that God is nowhere in the vicinity. God is Light and in him there is no darkness at all ", 1st John 1:5.

    2. You can't take the scripture out if context. Ppl should know how to dress for church. You don't have to be a church-goer to know that the house of The Lord is sacred and that we should dress out if respect for ourselves, but MOST importantly God and HIS HOUSE. Ppl use scriptures as a crutch sometimes. Sure, if u honestly don't own church attire and don't know what it is, then maybe I'd be more sympathetic. Some ppl know how to dress for church-they just opt to do the opposite and wear inappropriate attire

Not that it really matters, but was this a "gospel" performance or secular? I'm not familiar with who this lady is. So many churches have opened their doors to secular artists/performances, so then who the heck cares if what she wears was inappropriate for "church" or not?!

  11. I'm a member of Riverside Church since 1999. My wife and I were married at that church. My son was christened at that church. Both those events were officiated by the then senior minister, my pastor the Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes, a man who I respect more than any other with the exception of my father. Those two events are two of the best days of my life. We only stopped attending after moving away from NYC, but we remain members. As far as I'm concerned, in all the churches I've attended, Riverside is the most emblematic of God's teachings. Riverside is an all-inclusive church, meaning everyone is welcome, no matter of race, religion, political leanings, or sexual orientation, the church accepts EVERYONE as a child of God. To me, that's the way it's supposed to be and many of the churches I've attended outside of Riverside seem to have a difficult time grasping that. The fact that they DIDN'T turn this woman away, who should've reconsidered her outfit perhaps, is indicative of how this church really follows Christ's teachings. They didn't judge her. They allowed her in because she wanted to praise the Lord. In regards to someone who derided Riverside by saying they only care about social injustice, well isn't that what the church is supposed to be about?? Did I misunderstand the New Testament? Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke there. Nelson Mandela spoke there after he was freed from prison. Yes, it's a church that fights social injustice! That's what they're supposed to do! So, I'm suggesting that if you are judging his church because of who they let in, you either have never visited the church or you might want to revisit the philosophy of Jesus Christ instead of just memorizing the words in the Bible.

    1. We are judging that particular church because of WHO they are not letting in, and his name is JESUS!
Preaching a "Social Gospel" that`s disconnected from the Jesus of the Bible, doesn't save souls. Yes, you more than likely have misunderstood the New Testament! All unrighteousness is sin! Read the Book ! All may be free to come but if the Holy Spirit is reigning then "sinners" will be convicted and changed. Who cares who came to speak at the church, does that make it a House of God? No sir! Read the Epistles, read the book of Jude. If you don't know that this type of foolishness is wrong then I would suggest that you are a "Christian" in name only.

  12. This event was a fashion show, not a church service, by a high fashion fashion designer. Riverside church has rented its space out to many artists in the community for many years. It's a well respected staple in its multicultural community and has played host to many honorable and memorable events over the years. In fact, the space was used today by dignitaries for a star studded memorial service for Maya Angelou.

    1. I will admit I was curious to know why the outfit but when I saw it was a fashion show that the church hosted I knew it was not her intent to disrespect. On the other hand the church has the obligation to keep the sanctuary holy and not rent space for such an event. Hopefully an alter call was done at the end since you have an audience that should hear about the love of Christ and be told that they are even the more beautiful tastefully covered. In Christian love all is forgiven as I wish the same for me.

    2. Even though it was a fashion show it's in a church. Not appropriate. But if church rented it out then it's ok.

  13. @ Michael Jones, I think this church is doing great and wonderful things. I too am for social injustice of any kind. With that said Onlyone Harmony dressed inappropriately for church. Come as you are, is usually for poor people who may not have nice clothes, We all have compassion for people in that situation. Or for perhaps young people who may show up in blue jeans. Onlyone is not poor, nor is she a child. What she did was show poor taste and yes disrespect for church who represent God. Before people blame the Pastor, he probably had no clue that Onlyone was going to wear that outfit.

  14. Wouldn't be surprising since the majority of African American voters voted and re-voted for Homosexuality.

"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge"
    Hosea 4:6

Full verse 'My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children'

    1. No, African Americans voted in their best interest. In case you haven't noticed, the African American community has far bigger social issues to deal with than homosexuality. Things aren't so good for us that we can just ignore everything else a candidate is proposing and vote for them just because they're against homosexuality. If we do that we'll wind up back on a plantation somewhere with no rights and no voice. That good book that you folks love to quote also says "USE WISDOM"....why don't try obeying that part.

      Delete
    2. I guess you never heard of the Africans who sold the slaves to the slave traders or the slaves who worked for the plantation owners and were traitors to their own people. Voting has nothing to do with the best interest of the people. We might end up back on the plantation sooner then you think....

      Delete
    3. Well if we do, it won't be because of homosexuality. Get your mind right and focus on the issues that you have the power to change. Policing someone else's bedroom activities is not going to help our people at all. Let God deal with that.

There is no way she should have been allowed to walk in dressed like that and it not be addressed not here.
I am judging how did she get past the entrance door all the way on the stage and have a microphone in her hand.
I am judging the leaders in this house.
Is this a house for God?

This is not the character of Christ. Please stop addressing this as the House of God if it's ran as a club or entertainment spot.

I am judging, if this was to get more people to look at you, the Bible says this, don't let your good be evil spoken of.

If there's any good in your ministry, believe me from this view it's not spoken of as a good natured church.

I am not your judge of finality but I am judging the fruit of your labor. Amen. Help us Jesus!!!

  22. The fashion/drag show is not the issue. The issue is a historical church renting out its main sanctuary for an event of this nature. The show is more suited to the many NYC nightclubs through the city. It is one thing to let Maya Angelou perform but quite another thing for a drag show to be in sacred space. Riverside, for its long history of social justice, should use discretion in renting out their facilities. We should respect the church enough not to bring every activity not like Christ into our facilities.
