Has The Black Community In General Had A Difficult Time Accepting Women In Ministry?

By Rev. Dominique Atchison

Wonderful article over at "For Harriet.com." Confessions of a Black Lady Preacher: Why Can't You Just Call Me Reverend?

Now, I can only speak for myself here and of  my own experience, coming out of the construct of the black church.  I do believe the black Community in general has somewhat of a difficult time accepting women in pastoral positions. I myself have a problem with it. What are your thoughts?

  1. Comment From Facebook that I like and agree with:I applaud women who have answered their call to the preaching ministry and I applaud Dominique for writing a thought provoking article. Psalm 111:9 states, "Holy and reverend is his name."(KJV) Titles can become stumbling blocks to the actual call and mission of the ministry of Jesus Christ. And she is right, the black male "preacher's club" can be an "old boys network." However, it's important to recognize that misogyny is a result of sin in a fallen world. The commodification of women under the Law (Old Testament) was superseded by Grace and Truth (New Testament). Some of Jesus's closest disciples, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Susanna were powerful women who ministered with Jesus(Luke 8:1-3), his female disciples were with him at His death at the cross when most of his male disciples had abandoned him in fear (John 19:25-27), and a woman delivered the news of Jesus's resurrection to the cowering male disciples (John 20:1-10). The Book of Acts lists Priscilla, a powerful teacher in the early Christian church, mentored the powerful preacher Barnabbas (Acts 18: 24-28) Philip the evangelist' shad four daughters who were prophetesses (Acts 21:8-9), and Phoebe was the respected deaconess who labored with Paul (Romans 16:1-2). Racism, misogyny, and all the other ills of the world will remain until Christ returns to bring the New Jerusalem. "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." (Galatians 3:28) Work in the vineyard and look for your reward from the Owner of the vineyard, not from other workers.

  4. I wholeheartedly affirm women in all levels of ministry in the church. Without you, there would be no church. I acknowledge and support all that you have done to keep the church alive. She is all the better because of you. You, the women of the church, nurse her back to consciousness time and a time again when she flatlines on the respirator of righteousness and justice. You know her heartbeat. We need you not to leave her bedside. For without you, she will surely die.

It is ironic.. BEFORE I surrendered to my call on July 7, 2012.. I was told by "men" that I couldnt preach the Word of God.. I told my Father ( My Pastor) at 14 that I was called ..he said..no God don't use women... was told the same thing over the years by other Pastors.. since that day.. I haven't had a problem.. some of the "same men" that told me know.. then told me they knew and was wondering WHEN I was going to say something... I have decided NOT to worry about it.. My King has qualified me.. and those that dont accept me.. " I shake the dust off my feet"... move on...

    1. I Tim 3:15 specifically outlines how we are to conduct ourselves in the house of God. Among those instructions, women are Not Allowed to teach, nor usurp authority over the man. They are to learn in silence. Furthermore , Titus says that they are to teach the younger women to obey and love their husbands.

There is not one NT scripture which demonstrates that women are to pastor/shepherd over God's church

  6. Woman who loves the LordTuesday, 12 August, 2014

Why do we make things so difficult? Everybody in the Body of Christ is called to preach the Gospel to the lost, men and women, adults and children, young and old, abled and disabled. The Bible is full of examples. But since God is a God of order He gave rules for LEADERSHIP in the CHURCH. Leadership is not the same as TEACHING or PREACHING or other gifts. What I see in the Bible is that leadership in the church is given to MEN. There are a few exceptions were women lead the people of Israel, but that was in times when men were not taking up the leadership role because of sin (idolatry). So God send godfearing women to do the job like f.e Deborah. The Lord has used women in a mighthy way in ministry throughout history. So it's not about women in ministry, the church is full of women in ministry. It's about female leadership in the church. The problem is that women are not satisfied with their role as helpmeet and hate the idea of submission. And what do people mean with ministry? Is our family (for both men and women) not the greatest ministry we can ever have? I've learnt that ministry is being a servant, but people make it sound like it's something where you can rule over others. And about leadership: a mother is probably the most influential leader of all times!

    1. Very interesting point that you made. Most people want to go into "Ministry" not to serve others but to rule over others. If we look at the examples of leaders in the scriptures what made the good leaders "good" was actually their concern not only for the people but their willingness to serve God and most of the time they did not want to do it. Feminism as well as a lot of different philosophies are accepted within the church. We have allowed our "Americanism" become part of being a Christian. We are in the world but not to be apart of it. Even though we are all equal in Christ but being equal is not the same as position (Hand, foot, head, etc.)
