Church Announcement: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity To Pay Full Cost Of Michael Brown’s Memorial And Funeral Services!

The church would like to think Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity for offering to pay the entire costs for the memorial and funeral services of Michael Brown, the 18 year old teen who was shot to death by a Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson on August 9.

  1. So far over $57,000 has been raised by more than 25 people and groups to help the Brown Family through this difficult time. APA has always been one of the first to step up when needed.

    2. Why are folks and groups fighting over who pays for the funeral? It was announced on Tuesday that Rev. Al Sharpton was paying. There is much to be done by everyone. I know some don't like him , but the family requested him...I don't like pettiness . The release of this letter is tacky in my opinion.

    3. Tacky indeed!

    4. Sharpton just agreed to lead fund raising. That's very different from paying it yourself.

  2. This is what I'm talking about brotherhood stepping up to help

  3. Rumor has it that Kimora Lee Simmons also offered to pay. It would be nice if both could do it but I see A Phi A doesn't want a partner.

Nice the family is being helped, but this appears to be a PR stunt by this fraternity...they want sole recognition for aiding the family and had to give the fraternity's history in the first 2 sentences of the letter. Sort of gross the way they are using this to gain public support for their organization.

  5. Ever year someone raises the question of whether fraternal organizations are still relevant and if still need groups rooted in the African American experience. This latest move by the brothers of Alpha serves as powerful testament as to why the need still exists. It's nice that kimora offered but I think it's more compelling that the men of Alpha do this.

  6. Nice gesture. However, they should have gone without mentioning the "desire not to share the expense with other persons..." because it devalues their efforts. It makes it seem as though they are not only looking for recognition, but want to be the only group recognized. Seems a little...off

  7. Its a publicity move because where are these organizations when young black teenagers are killed every day and the parents are trying to sell dinners to earn enough money to bury their child ??? I guess the organizations dont care about those deceased kids because they aren't high profile cases right ??? Come on people when are we going to open are eyes ?

    1. Publicity or not, it's put up or shut up and they put up. Good for them

    2. What does it matter if it's a PR move or not. The main focus should be that this organization stepped up when others didn't. They are willing to provide financial help when others didn't. I'm sure the young man's mother and family appreciate their kind gesture even though others don't. Yes it's true we need to open our eyes and hopefully in doing so we can also see the positive side and not so much of the all consuming negative. ..

    3. I agree, publicity or not these black men are doing what is right. Why do we always have to hate? When Jesus comes back what are we going to then?

    4. ??? How does Jesus play into your statement? If you wanna bring Jesus up, didn't Jesus say give in secret and not publicly like the Pharisees? Their letter is obviously a plea for attention smh. Everyone who speaks truth is not a hater.

  8. Hated this letter. Words like "please comply" and "do not share this expense with any other person" irritated the mess out of me. No kudos from me. That momma could care less about MLK and Thurgood Marshall. Neither will bring her son back. How about this , pay for the funeral in secret so this boy can have a decent burial with no strings attached. Spare me please Alpha!
