“16 and Pregnant”

MTV is at it again! It has come out with a new show that follows the lives of high school girls who are pregnant. In my teen years being pregnant was frown upon not celebrated. Any way the show is called “16 and Pregnant,” and the following trailer will give you an idea for what this mini-series has in store:

Now I watched the show for the second time the other night, and I don't think it's a good idea. To me it almost seem like MTV is glamorizing the idea of teen pregnancy. All you see is young girls throwing baby showers and getting excited about how cute the baby will be.

I believe that’s the last unrealistic message that MTV’s viewers need to hear. Lately in the news there were stories of young girls who intentionally got pregnant for a myriad of reasons. Is it safe to say that when most young people make the fateful decision to have sex before they’re married, they’re not considering the weight of their actions. So is MTV feeding their naiveté? Question: Do shows like this de-stigmatize out-of-wedlock pregnancies? What's your thoughts?

  1. I watched the show and I don't think they are glamorizing teen pregnancy at all. I see it more as a precautionary tale. Having to tell the father, having to tell parents and friends, going thru labor, wondering where money will come from, etc. Yes they show a baby shower, but that's is to get stuff for the baby not to celebrate unprotected sex.

If anything, I hope that from these shows, including Sex with Mom and Dad hosted by Dr. Drew, that parents realize the importance of having a thorough and thoughtful converstation about sex, about family planning, about stds/stis, about Hiv/Aids, about the emotional rollercoaster that starting a sexual relationship can bring.

There was no sex talk in my home. Everything I learned about sex I learned from friends, books, or the street. The internet was just starting to become mainstream but I didnt have access to it.

I think these shows can be teachable moments if parents choose to treat them that way.

  3. Hello there!

I think that there are many parents who don't discuss sex with their children. People were stunned when I mentioned at my blog a week ago that it was my father who taught me how to put on a condom. (And no, he was not the test subject, if anyone out there is stir crazy enough to even think that!)

I am glad that my father was not silent about the need to discuss the implications of sexual behavior. I am happy to say that my father has NO grandchildren produced out of wedlock. I believe that his willingness to discuss the issues openly is one reason why his children didn't learn about how to be responsible sexual persons from those who were emotionally immature - or from those who wanted to gain advantage from someone else's lack of exposure.

My father felt it was a HORRIBLE disgrace on the family name to ever bring children into the world out of wedlock...and I know that has stayed with me throughout adulthood.

When people ask me, "do you have children?" and they don't see a wedding band on my finger, I look at them as if they are absolutely crazy. They think that ALL black women will condone that...

    Peace, blessings and DUNAMIS!

  4. I saw this one. And I agree with you. They seem to be celebrating teen pregnancy. I was pretty outraged by the whole thing.

  5. I feel like they seem to go back and forth from celebratory to really showing what is going on. The only two of these shows that I have seen has been very sad thus far. I watched one with my daughters that showed a guy who was irresponsible and will watch one this week that shows a girl crying about losing her teen-hood. I think it is an eye-opening look into what could happen if unprotected sex occurs without your husband. I can tell you from experience that NO amount of baby showers can alleviate the fear, shame, and struggle that goes into raising a child on your own.
