Taking liberties or assuming airs beyond one's place in a social hierarchy. Assuming equality with someone higher up the social ladder. This is what I remember growing up in the deep south. My grand mother would always address white people and other older blacks with Mrs/ Mr. The blacks would address her in the same fashion ( they call it putting a handle on your name) But the whites no matter what the age would call her Azzie which was her first name. I didn't like it when people call my grand mother by her first name because to me it was a sign of disrespect. The Old South whites would not allow their subordinates (people under them) to address them by their first name, because it shows uppityness and they would put you in your place with a good tongue lashing. I like the article that appeared in the New York Times . I believe the Old South is still alive and well. Thats part of the reason Obam and Michelle is catching hell. That Old South way of thinking is enbeded within alot of well meaning people. For that reason alone with give me great pleasure in pulling that level for Obama on Nov 4.
