King's dream speech spoke of a "promissory note" given by the nation's founders to guarantee everyone life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That such a note waited so long to be paid to African-Americans proved to be the nation's deepest scar. At noon on Tuesday, January 20, 2009, the promissory note will receive a hefty down payment. For when Barack Obama takes the oath of office as the nation's first African-American President, a portion of King's dream will have been realized - that people "will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." We had another dreamer in scripture by the name of Joseph. His dreams included stars and sheaves of grain favoring him over others. Hidden from Joseph was the painful path by which the dream would be fulfilled. Some lies a pit and treachery..... Years passed, but Joseph clung to his dream, as did Martin Luther King, Jr. Maybe another part of King's dream can now be fulfilled as well. May all of us be able to "sit down together at a table of brotherhood."
