Where did we get the idea that everyone has to like us? Certainly not from God's word... Jesus said His blessings were reserved for the "persecuted and reviled" If you're thin-skinned you'll have a tough time because you'll be an easy target for the enemy... I said that to say this, First Lady Michelle must always be watchful of the many hateful and painful arrows that will be coming her way and some from people who look like her...I believe endurance is the secret for life race not popularity...Paul says "it matters very little to me what you think of me even less where I rank in popular opinion. I don't even rank myself...The Master makes that judgment."(1 Co 4:3-5 )
Have you every been backhanded complimented before? I have and those kinda of compliments don't leave you feeling good at all....For example: You drop some weight or change your hair, girl now you look like your self what! Who was I looking like before? Don't a compliment suppose to make one feel good? So, why insult someone, when you can disguise it as a compliment?... Intentional or not, some people have the art of backhanded compliments down... Like supermodel Iman for example...Now Iman was once beautiful enough to have been consider as a Top Model...Why? Was it because her features conform more closely to mainstream ideal of beauty? Meaning she resembles a white woman more than the first lady? I will agree that The First Lady features and body do not conform to the mainstream ideal of beauty so, do that make her ugly? No!
It hurts to hear this shortsightedness vocalized by a woman like Iman, who has the power like lady Michelle to influence young black girls and help shape mainstream opinions of black beauty...I am also, disappointed that Iman took her opportunity to speak out and used it to demean black beauty in favor of the more white beauty standard.
