Where Is The Black Church On The #MeToo Movement!?!??!

In my humble opinion, the Black Church has operated for decades under a cloud of shame and silence. During my years in the church, I have seen this story repeated dozens of times. I’ve met women who weren’t believed or who were returned to their abusers with the admonishment to “submit.” We’ve seen similar stories play out in the news over and over, but for every woman brave enough to bring her story to the press, there are likely hundreds more suffering in silence.

I just witness an online conversation between a young lady and a church elder about a well-known prophet who has once again managed to be in the news.   The church elder said that some of us are treading on dangerous territory when it comes to calling out church leadership. We are not to Rebuke an Elder! I guess this is "touch not my anointed" being placed on an elder and as such, nothing should be said about him so that no harm befalls the person speaking truth to the matter and behaviors of said "elder."

Anyhow, the #MeToo movement has forced Hollywood, Washington, and Wall Street to grapple honestly with patterns of sexual harassment and abuse. But many Black Churches are still struggling to embrace such an idea and are scared of the disruption it could possibly bring.

I know folks who have experienced abuse firsthand when they came to the church for help as a victim of domestic violence. After years of enduring physical, mental and emotional abuse, they filed for divorce and turned to their church for aid, but instead of helping, the church instead called them before church discipline as punishment for divorce. Why the abuser received no condemnation.

I applaud the Southern Baptists for acknowledging there is a problem among them.  Maybe the Black Holiness Church will follow. 🙄 There have been abuses and improprieties in every Christian denomination, to put it mildly. Its presence isn’t new, an eye-opener or any type of surprise at this point.
I'm wondering why the Black Church is so silent on this issue?

  1. People who misuse First Timothy 5:1 whenever there is a scandal are ignorant of scripture and haven't studied properly. That verse has to deal with someone who is OLDER than Timothy, and NOT someone who holds an office in the church body. The proper verse is found in the same chapter verses 19-20. If someone is found guilty of sexual crimes then he/she SHOULD be rebuked before all, and if that person refused to repent then they should be excommunicated from the church.

  2. Ms.Ann,
I think a lot of what’s happening now in the Black Church is not really #metoo. But, it’s more so sexual misconduct by spiritual leaders. I don’t think the two should be used interchangeably!

    3. Awesome response Ms. Ann. What happens when the women have been shamed and silenced? Is it the church community responsibility to aid these women?
For example, last week you had the opportunity to use your platform to shed light on a situation and you chose to “Black out” names. It looks like you want to subconsciously bring awareness to the #metoo movement within the Black Church.

  3. Only when these pastors & preachers are called out for their abuse of power, there will be change. As long as folks remain silent, there will be those who will suffer. Start dropping names and stop being afraid of their influence.

    2. Name dropping can be tricky and may open the blog owner up to all sorts of litigation. Because there really isn't any easy way to determine truth from friction or maliciousness from awareness on the internet. Credible people with real credible stories should reach out to the authorities and other entities who have the capacity, resources, and responsibility to investigate, verify and validate. There are many many platforms for such situations.

  5. GURL! I mean... Miss Ann, I can tell you some stories! The latest one that I read of was where the Sister in Christ sought spiritual counseling from her married Pastor. Anyway to make a long story shorter; The MARRIED Pastor gave her something to drink and all she remembers after that is awakening on the floor with her panties pulled down to her ankles and her bra askew. She noticed oil smeared all over her breasts and vagina. Also, she felt as if she had been penetrated. OH! There are some GOODIES with this topic! Another one where a 40 something year old Sister was told that she was bad and that she must remove her clothing and bend over the MARRIED Pastor's knee to receive her spanking punishment! And, she actually did that... We won't bring up (as you have) that many women who are mentally and physically abused by their husbands and told by the Pastors and elder clergy to return to that abuse! Or, the unmarried women who become pregnant and who are vilified but nothing is done to the male that impregnated her.

Until women gather a backbone, READ AND UNDERSTAND the scriptures for themselves, NAME NAMES, and just let it be known that they simply "ain't havin' it" it will continue!

  6. Ann in my opinion there are still far to many women who do not understand what exactly sexual harassment and assault actually are. They are women who have always lived in a world where both actions have been part of their 'reality,' and they do not fully understand that they do not have to endure this kind of abuse. A lot of pastors wives fall into this category. There are portions of our society that still believe 'boys will be boys' is a proper response to inappropriate behavior, and they are the individuals who need to be taught that those days are over. Pastors sleeping with members of the congregation is abuse, in case some have forgotten.

  8. The church has a message way more powerful than the METOO movement. It's called forgiveness. "Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his clothing, and cast lots." We must FORGIVE, if we are to be forgiven!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Are you saying to ignore people’s trauma because we have to forgive??????????

      Delete
    2. All I am saying is the GREATER message is FORGIVE -

"For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins."

"So watch yourselves. “If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”

"Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

I personally believe there is HEALING in forgiving. It definitely JOY in being OBEDIENT to the LORD's command.

Not to underplay, but these victims didn't suffer no more that Christ did.

    3. WOWEE! So... what is your answer to JC's question? If a women, (or, man), is literally raped by another member of the flock--an Elder or Clergy of the church let's say, the victim and church should respond "how"?

      Delete
    4. Anonymous I am a bit flabbergasted by your response! You said “the church has a grater meassage than the METOO movement. It’s called forgiveness.” If you’re speaking to someone who has been offended by spiritual leaders, you will lose them at this very point!!! While I believe forgiveness is necessary and important. Does forgiving negate accountability? Does forgiving mean to ignore the trauma of the victims?

      Delete
    5. Sure, RAPE is a CRIME. And any crime committed is punishable by law, The LORD desires we lead quiet and peaceable lives. That's why he admonishes us to pray for kings, and presidents (even TRUMP). Instead we operate in the flesh to make up our own way to PROTEST and create strife.

"I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty."

Even though judgment can be pass through the LAW, the LORD says even MORE, the power REAL saints have in judging better than even the most powerful king.

"Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life? If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church. I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?"

The LORD have gifted many men (white evangelicals and black evangelicals alike) with the "GIFT OF WISDOM". It is GOD HIMSELF, the Holy Ghost who gives men these GIFTS. Reference I Cor, Romans and Ephesians, the gifts GOD imparts to His people.

If a Christian Pastor rapes a Christian Sister, the sister should take along another member of the body so to confront the Pastor (as a brother in the LORD) that he may repent. If the Pastor fails to do so, he should be brought before the body. If he continues in his unrepentant state, he should be excommunicated and given over to Satan.

As for the TRAUMA (as you people hone to exaggerate, seeming neglecting a common part of the Christian walk that all of us are going to have tests and trials, many fiery trials), the LORD provides the CLEANSING and HEALING POWER in FORGIVENESS. He has gifted His people with gifts of mercy, counseling, healing, knowledge, wisdom, ALL these gifts to EDIFY the BODY, including saints who are hurting. The LORD always provides a WAY of ESCAPE! And even individually, we ALL, EACH one of US can take our burdens to the LORD.

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved” (Psalm 55:22).

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light”.

Instead to maturing in the WORD of God and in His ways, seeking to learn HIS will, all these s0-called Christians (many here on this site) desire to remain in their STUPOR that they can EMPOWER themselves to bring about change. All along continuing to go deeper and deeper into the very rabbit hole the themselves create. If we are going to be Christian, we must do it HIS WAY! Man's wisdom is but foolishness to HIM. Man ignore the wise things of God and call those things but foolishness.

But back to this HYPOTHETICAL situation about a PASTOR raping a sister, it is my contention that that DUDE is not SAVED and thus is NEVER CONSIDERED to be a pastor. And if that woman is sitting under his ministry, she has like never heard the real Gospel preached and thus too is NOT SAVED, just like many of you here.

We want to throw in unbiblical terms like accountability and trauma and words many of these WOLVES use to brand themselves, when GOD uses simple and powerful terms like FORGIVENESS and MERCY and GRACE and RECONCILATION and JUSTIFY and SIN...for WHAT?

  9. The Black Church, especially mega churches are afraid of losing their Pastors. If the victims don’t press it, then why would the Church shine a spotlight on the issue. Or most of the time, the victims get money hungry and sell their souls and voice for a $$

    1. Anonymous "BINGO" why should I as a blogger bring a SPOTLIGHT to your issue, risk being sued by a gangsta pastor while you the victim take the money and run? Not saying that's what happen in the case against the Atlanta pastors. I'm almost sure it was. Anyhow in these last and evil days people are loving their church and pastor more than they do Holiness and righteousness ,which we are actual called to be. I remember when 45 was running for the highest office in the land when he made the claim that he could "stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody" and not "lose any voters." 45 stance back then reminds me of a lot of todays pastors, they can do anything under the sun and folks still will support them.

  10. “Gangsta Pastor.” I hollered!!!

But this is why these Pastors get away with it. But my question is, How would you get sued if the information being stated is true- - publicly filed court cases is more than enough. Those pastors can’t argue or debate facts.

This is probably what has happened with the Atlanta/Decatur megachurch Pastor. My question is: Is the woman forced to keep her child hidden to avoid scandal?

Until victim shaming ends and true accountability measures are put in place, this kind of stuff will get pushed under the rug!!!!
