Is It An Erroneous Belief That The Church Of God In Christ Does Not Embrace Women In Ministry?

So this happen early in the week at the 2018 Hampton Minister’s Conference in Hampton, Virginia . On June the 5th the 103rd Session of the Hampton University Ministers' Conference and the 83rd Session of the Choir Directors' and Organists' Guild was officially called to order. According to online chatter, the conference were to elect a new president for the coming two years.

Now, I don't know all the details about what went down but I do know it got messy.....Dr. Joseph Connor won the election as President of Hampton Ministers Conference, but before the ink could dry on the document, the election was suddenly taken away just as fast it were given. Folks are asking did this have anything to do with COGIC stand on women in ministry?

Dr. Joseph Conner got 321 votes while Dr. Cynthia Hale got 271 votes. Now, I don't know what prompt COGIC General Counsel to issue the above letter.

  1. It's just a matter of time this "weak" church ordain women as Bishop and Pastors.

    1. I wouldn't call COGIC weak. Progress is being made in this area of our church. I will agree we have a ways to go, but its coming... During the Womens Convention last week Mother Lewis acknowledged the department who oversees the Women Pastors in the COGIC.

  2. I thought COGIC women could pastor under the Shephardess classification. They cannot be Elders, Superintendents, nor Bishops. They can also be Missionary Evangelists. I know this and I am United Methodist. Dr. Harvey has a university to run, he doesn't need anything else on his plate. Dr. Conner should be able to serve as conversation president.

    1. That's not the argument. COGIC does not allow women to PASTOR or become MINISTER/ELDERESS is their argument.

  3. People say COGIC doesn’t embrace women in ministry or allow women to preach. But the last time I checked there were other denominations that don’t even allow women to operate in ministry... meanwhile... we just had a women’s convention a week ago where the preaching line up was all women!!!!

  4. Rumor have it that the election community really wanted Dr. Hale to have the position. I personally know of some churches that don't even allow women in the pulpit, and they aren't cogic churches.

    1. Thanks Eric for commenting. So is that the reason why they had to have a second election?

  5. Ms. Ann, I know a couple of women in our church that have elders licenses. Because of the culture of the church, they just don't broadcast it. Two of them got their licenses under Bishop GE Patterson. It also depends on the Jurisdiction too. In my jurisdiction we have one female pastor and she is acknowledged in the jurisdiction, and in our Pastors & Elder's Counsel as Pastor. But as you just said, her blue and Gold card doesn't say Pastor. We still have a long way to go, and I can't wait until men with an open mind and understanding of the word of God are in these places of higher authority. I also can't wait until the women who know how to be a lady, and still preach the word of God, and aren't afraid of dogmatic men and dogmatic older women take their place in higher authority! As long as God is on the throne of Heaven, I know it's going to happen in my lifetime.

    2. Ms Sapp this has NOTHING to do with understanding the word of God. Because if you and others here truly understood the word of God you would respect God's order and say no to feminism. God's order is right and truth and there is NO biblical precedent for women as church leaders and actually the bible speaks against it. But don't let truth stand in the way of disobedience.

  6. Ann, I’m a big supporter of my denomination, and Dr. Conner is a mentor. I’m thrilled he won, and offended by the politricks against him and (and by proxy) our denomination.

    Having said all that:
Our denomination at some point is going to have to stop making women second-class ministers. It’s 2018 and we lag far behind when it comes to validating the call on many of the lives of our women. If you’re called to preach, you’re called to preach. If you’re called to Pastor, you’re called to Pastor. Period. Credentialed women like Joyce Rogers should not have to settle for an evangelist missionary certificate when they can outpreach, outstudy, and outlead many of their male counterparts.

  7. I believe as the Bible and Elder Carter teaches. Women should no teach men. Anything that contradicts the WORD of God is NOT progress. It is SIN!

    1. Anonymous, thanks for the comment. We are having this issue at our church. My Pastor favors the Bible over desired trends. He clearly gives Biblical examples of How God uses women and has gifted all believes to serve for the edification of the Body. I wish there were more Pastor like the one who is the shepherd over our congregation. We must stick with the Bible.

  8. Bishop Blake may try to incorporate women in more areas of the church but I don't see Women being given the title of Elder nor Bishop in the Church of God In Christ. It will create too much division and split the local churches. To be honest I don't believe the body wants women pastors or bishops. With that being said it will be interesting to see how this turns out, I thought it was odd to have Judys picture up next to Linwood Dillard's and Bishop Blakes like she was co chair or Vice President of the AIM department. I wonder if this will be used as Dillard's time to become a bishop and let Judy have AIM, that would be a first, I don't think there has ever been a Female AIM President.

  9. If a church allows women to preach, they are still in error. It's not the credentials that make it wrong.

    1. Right. Instead of seeking degrees and promotions, they should seek to be better makers of homes, teaching these young women how to be modest and love their husbands and the LORD. These young girls have no true Titus 2 women to instruct them. shalom...

    2. LADY BROCK, COGIC DOESN'T ORDAINED WOMEN EVERYONE KNOWS THAT. THEY EXCEPT WOMEN PASTORS AND THERE MONEY AD EVANGELIST MISSIONARIES OR EVANGELIST OR SHEPHERDESS. BUT THEY DON'T GIVE WOMEN CREDENTIALS LICENSE FOR PASTORAL. YOU CAN ALSO BE A JURIS DICTIONAL SUPERVISOR AND BE A PASTOR . THE WOMEN ARE THE ONES THAT MAKE THE MONEY FOR COGIC THE WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION IS ONE OF THE LARGEST CONVENTION THAT COGIC HAS .BUT THEY STILL TREAT THE WOMEN AS SECOND CLASS CITIZENS . THERE ARE SOME COGIC WOMEN THAT CAN TEACH, PREACH MOST OF THE MEN IN THERE AFFIRMATION . THEY ARE ALSO VERY EDUCATED NOT WITH JUST BIBLICAL DEGREES BUT WITH OTHER DEGREES . BUT THERE IS SO MUCH CONFLICT BETWEEN THE WOMEN THAT THEY CAN'T GET TOGETHER . AND TAKE A STAND AND LET THE NATIONAL CHURCH KNOW WHSY THEY WILL TAKE AND WHAT THEY WON'T . THEY CAN START BY CLOSING UP THERE PURSES. BUT THE WOMEN SO BUSY FIGHTING OVER POSTIONS THAT'S NOT IMPORTANT ONLY ABOUT DOLLARS AND NOT SOULS .

    3. Those woman are horrible when they preach. They appeal to the emotions because by nature they themselves are emotional. They butcher the meaning and interpret the Bible incorrectly. Many of them don't preach the gospel. They teach experiences over doctrine.

    4. NO WOMAN IN THE HISTORY OF THE CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST HAS EVER BEEN GIVEN . CREDENTIAL LICENSES FOR BEING AN ELDER NOR BISHOP. SO STOP LYING ON BISHOP G.E.PATTERSON. CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST DOES NOT ORDAINED WOMEN AS PASTORS. BISHOP CONNORS IS ON THE JUDICIARY BOARD OF THE CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST. WHICH IS LIKE THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. SO HE KNOWS THAT THE CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST DOES NOT ORDAINED WOMEN AS PASTORS . SO THE COMMITTEE FELT THAT HE WOULDN'T BE A GOOD EXAMPLE TO REPRESENT THEM.

  10. COGIC DOES allow women to fully work in ministry.
Just because COGIC does not allow women bishops, elders and ministers is ridiculous to think that we are behind the times.
In that area COGIC is trying to stay authentic to scripture.
Personally, I wouldn't sit under a woman pastor, nor will I sit under a woman bishop, elder, or minister.

  11. People find scriptures to support their doctrine. Often they are used outside of context to promote racism, slavery and even chauvinism. Having a vagina and breast should not eliminate a person from ministry in the church. The Bible imstructs "slaves to obey their masters," and "to build safe cities for killers" and even more, says " that His Spirit will pour out on all, sons and daughters will prophesy" -- how are churches responsing to that? This argument of women's roles in the chruch is tired and old. We are losing souls. And younger generations are finding church more irrelevant anyways, according to recent studies. Considering that most black churches are filled with women -- the better question is, "How are women's particpation, at all ranks, buildimg the church and the Kingdom of God?"
