Question: Can a person's name be in the book of life, and then be blotted out?

Reader God keeps good records. He knows His own, and He has set the names of His children permanently in His book. Many struggle with this issue because of what they have been taught in churches and denominations, but believers must search out the scriptures for themselves. God keeps good records. I believe the names in the ‘Lamb’s Book of Life’ were written before the foundation of the world by the finger of God! No further names are either added or deleted in time! And because in a sense those names are written with the very blood of Jesus, THEY CAN NEVER BE BLOTTED OUT!

Pastor John Piper:

When it comes to the doctrine of eternal security or perseverance of the saints, we need to speak with precision, Scriptures do mentions you can be blotted out of the book of life.....but I don’t think it ever says you can be blotted out, at least not in the sense that sometimes God does it. It says we will be blotted out if we fail to meet certain conditions. Now whether that ever happens or in God’s sovereignty can happen is another question. I don’t think so and let me try to show why.

Rest Here:

  1. Please provide scripture to back up your belief. Other than that l, the statement you made is your opinion and not scriptural and please don't say search the scripture yourself. For the bible says

    Jude 3King James Version (KJV)

3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

    1. Hey Ira how you doing? good I hope. Me and you done gone down this road a couple of times and I'm refusing to go again. You believe one can have salvation and then lose it, I don't agree with that. Like I said God keeps good records. He knows His own, and He has set the names of His children permanently in His book.

John 10:27-30 King James Version (KJV)
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
30 I and my Father are one.
      Praise God!

  2. Piper uses no valid scripture to make his point of one saved always saved but I can give you a multitude of Scripture that says you can "fall from grace"

  3. You can fall from grace, but you can repent of your sins and change direction. "Once saved, always saved" has been a bone of contention for many believers. Piper probably dealt with the subject the best he could, but he is coming from a Calvinist perspective.

  4. I agree with Piper, the Scripture testifies that whosoever’s names are written in the ‘Book of Life’ were written there BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD!
“And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him (the Antichrist), whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world”. [Rev 13:8]
What I may do or not do in time does not determine whether my name will be written in that book! The names of those who are written in the Lambs Book of Life are not written there because God either foresaw or knew that they would someday ‘choose Him’ as ‘personal saviour’!
If your name is written in this ‘Book of Life’, then you are among the chosen or the elect of God. And that is the reason you believed the gospel when you heard it – i.e. because you were ordained to eternal life! “And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and AS MANY as were ordained to eternal life believed”. [Acts 13:48] Notice, not any more or any less, but AS MANY as were ORDAINED TO ETERNAL LIFE – BELIEVED!
These whose names are written in this “Book of Life” become true believers and followers of Christ by and by not by their ‘own free-will’ but because GOD has chosen them to be His own! As the Lord said- “ye have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you”! [John 15:16]. And the Apostle reiterates this when he says, “But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath FROM THE BEGINNING CHOSEN YOU TO SALVATION through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth”! [2Thes 2:13]

All that to say, if God has written your name in the ‘Lamb’s book of Life’ then you are ETERNALLY SECURE and will be preserved and kept faithful till the end! The Lord Jesus is the author of your faith and He is the ‘finisher’ too! (Heb 12:2). It is He who began a good work in you, and it is He who will finish it, and to Him shall be ALL the glory! (Phil 1:6).

  5. Miss Ann,

God can blot out one's name from the book of life if they do sin against him.

"Whosoever hath sinned against me; him will I blot out of my book." (Exodus 32:33).

Those who are in the book of life SHOULD NOT partake of sin.

"And there shall in no wise enter into it any that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life." (Revelation 21:27).

All believers should know that terms and conditions apply.

Let us strive to enter in at the strait gate (Luke 13:24, Matthew 7:13-14).
