The Bible Answer Man, Hank Hanegraaff, Leaves the Christian Faith?

Reader, this news has really shaken the online Christian community.  I know of this man by way of his radio talk show, years ago. Known to millions as the “Bible Answer Man,” 77-year-old Hank Hanegraaff and his wife were received into the Orthodox Church this year on the great feast of Palm Sunday, at St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church in Charlotte, NC.

There are numerous reports out on social media that the well-known talk show host and evangelical apologist has left the biblical Christian faith for Greek Orthodox tradition.

On Palm Sunday, April 9th, 2017, Hanegraaff was apparently received into the Greek Orthodox church through a rite known as Chrismation, at St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. A well-known Orthodox priest, Thomas Soroka, from St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in McKees Rocks, PA, stated on his Facebook page.

  1. "...If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow me." (Luke 9:23).

"...So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin." (Romans 7:25)

Living according to the precepts of God is not about how one feels. It is setting aside our emotions, and setting our minds on keeping his commandments. Once we get that we can fully appreciate that the whole duty of man is to fear God and to keep his commandments (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

So we make a choice not to feel good, but to do that which is acceptable to the LORD our God. And there is a price (Matthew 19:29).

Hanegraaff chose the easy way out.

    1. Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons… –1 Timothy 4:1. This does not surprise me with this man. The Orthodox Church is a false expression of Christianity, much like the Roman Catholic Church, that is highly driven by graven images and denies the biblical doctrine of salvation by grace alone through faith alone, and instead, trusts in meritorious works and a sacramental system for salvation. This flies in the face of Ephesians 2:8-9, which states,
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast

This conversion would make Hank Hanegraaff an apostate. This is what Arminianism can lead to if the Lord leaves us in such a false belief of salvation. Salvation is strictly monergistic, and Hank always taught that it was a synergistic act between God and man. 4. My god and good grief--the evangelicals et al, are already saying he's lost his faith....pray for him! (the only thing they get right--ironically--is this-"a testimony of the dismal state of the evangelical church in our modern day. There is a sure lack of biblical truth and doctrinal stability to which many can be left wandering. ")

  5. Ms. Ann hopefully one of your readers smarter than me can explain how the Eastern Orthodox Church biblically defends their sacrament of "chrismation"? I'm curious as to how the "Bible Answer Man" Hank Hanegraaff can affirm this and other issues within Eastern Orthodoxy and walk away from Evangelicalism.

  6. I learned that the Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic church split after the fall of the Roman Empire. Therefore, I wondered could many of the traditions that we learned in our churches were part of the Roman Catholic Church.

  10. Former CRI researcher Robert Bowman (who was at CRI under the founder , Walter Martin, and for a few years when Hanegraaff first took over the leadership of CRI after Martin's death) has written a response to Hanegraaff's reception into the Church -
