How Can Christians Know for Sure That They Are Saved??


Reader, how can Christians know for sure that they are saved?  Matthew 7:21-23 is one of the most alarming passages in the Bible. It warns that not everyone who claims Jesus as their Lord is sincerely saved. This means that many think they know Christ, but will come to find out that they never truly knew Him in a saving way. I can vividly remember reading this passage many times in the past and being shaken to the core. The false-conversion idea is echoed in the Parable of the Sower of Mark 4:1-20. 


Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church said our guarantee lies only in God. When it comes to assurance of salvation, Warren explained on his website that Christians need only look at the story of Jesus Christ's crucifixion and the conversation He had with one of the criminals hanging next to Him on the cross.

    A quote from Warren’s the linked website: “What is your assurance of salvation? The promise of God’s Word. If God says it, that settles it, because God cannot lie. You can trust the promise of God’s Word. You can rest in it.”

    Unfortunately he does not expound on some of the pertinent issues. I.e. obedience to God’s commandments and how we can be preserved until the last day.

    In obeying God’s commandments we fulfill our duty (Ecclesiastes 12:13). It is the WORD of God the preserves us, gives us life, wisdom, knowledge and understanding (Psalm 119).

    The other thing that would help us ensure that we have been saved is to review the lists of those who will NOT make it to the Kingdom of God: “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11); “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8).

    Now that we know Christ, we should learn how to behave in a Christ-like manner. For he is our perfect example (1 Peter 2:21-22) and was obedient even unto death (Philippians 2:8). Therefore, we sin NO MORE and OBEY God’s commandments.

    As believers in Christ, the onus is on us to equip ourselves in order not to be swayed away from the TRUTH that is found in the WORD of God. David declared that he hid the WORD of God in his heart to ensure he doesn’t sin against God. We should adopt the same attitude (Psalm 119:11, Ephesians 6:11-18) and trust God that His Spirit of truth will guide us into all TRUTH (John 16:13). For God himself is able to teach us his ways (Psalm 119:12).

    Let us learn to read the WORD of God from Genesis to Revelation iteratively, every day.
