Healthy Churches 2020 National Conference,Black Men, Depression and The Black Church, With Gospel Legend Richard Smallwood.

Reader, the first of it kind a national conference that's in it third year of bringing the church & public health community together for real talk & resolution on mental and physical health. Gospel Legend Richard Smallwood will be tackling the subject: Black Men, Depression and The Black Church.

Young Black males, as suicide victims, were unheard of growing up in 1970’s. However, presently, according to the American Association of Suicidology, suicide rates for African-American males ages (15-24) increased 83% in the early 80’s and 90’s. More importantly, most suicide victims suffered from depression at their end. Suicide has become a statistical reality for many young brothers. The sad fact that young males are killing themselves is startling, but the communities’ silence is worse, even tragic. As a result, Black communities face stinging charges of being callous, insensitive, and more importantly, mis-educated. It is my belief; the silent epidemic on Black men and depression must be shattered.

  1. Miss Ann,

This all sounds good. But I do wonder if they did touch on pertinent verses in the WORD of God which is for life, preservation, wisdom, knowledge, and understanding (Psalm 119).

Psalm 119:11-16 "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee... I will meditate in thy precepts... I will not forget thy word."

Our young men should be taught how to live according to the precepts of God and keep his commandments.

Proverbs 4:20-27 "My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings... for they are life... Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy feet from evil."

Romans 7:5-25 "For when we were in flesh, the motions of sins... did move our members to bring forth fruit unto death... but now we are delivered... we should serve in newness of spirit... For I know that in... my flesh dwelleth no good thing... So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin."

The LORD is my Shepherd, I shall NOT want...

    1. @"The Lord is my Shepherd".

      They prefaced their conference saying
"In addition, we must refuse to endorse the religious based mythology, only the blood of Jesus heals"

That statement alone should give some indication, just how much they intend to touch on pertinent verses in the Word of God.

  2. And what's wrong with that statement?

Good to see that some churches recognize that they're social, medical and psychological issue that MUST be addressed with medical help in addition to prayer.

    1. Stop the madness...

The Lady who commented first said she wondered if they touched of pertinent verses in the Word of God.

To which I responded with their statemen.as an indication they probably didn't use much of the Bible.

Now you come asking what's wrong with that statement? Step back a little and settle down, and stop being eager in your defensiveness, you can't seem to comprehend a two statement dialogue.

Le5 me ask you a question saint of God. Do you believe healing through the BLOOD OF JESUS is "religious based MYTHOLOGY"?

    2. Example : Someone, lets say has sickle cell anemia, shingles, or cancer or worse yet your in a fire and have 2nd and 3rd degree burns..... are YOU going to rely on prayer alone? Does one forego medical treatment and rely entirely on prayer or use modern medicine and prayer.

      No madness here !!!

    3. You sound a bit incoherent. Again, the lady commented her concern if they would touch on pertinent verses in the of God. I replied in a way to say I doubt it given their statement "the BLOOD of Jesus" is a religious based MYTHOLOGY.

You lacking comprehension asked what's wrong with that statement, when no one said anything about the statement being right or wrong. WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THEIR USE OF PERTINENT SCRIPTURES. My Granddaughter could comprehend that!

And since you asked "what's wrong with the statement", I followed on to ask you saint of God if you believe healing through the BLOOD OF JESUS is a "religious based mythology", WHICH YOU DID NOT ANSWER.

Now you are talking about sickle cell, and cancer and burns, AND you say of yourself, NO MADNESS?

Please spare me and the REST OF US.

Are you using and abusing or what?

  3. As a preacher who majored in psychology I'm torn between the two and therefore I build my anchor upon biblical psychology. While I agree the blood and wounds of Jesus brought about our healing. We must also understand the psychology of renewing the mind.

Yes, I believe in God & psychology... and I believe pastors should be equipped to deal with both. Jesus not only healed physical conditions but He also healed psychological illnesses.

    1. Im curious, what is biblical psychology from a Biblical perspective?

    2. Biblical psychology is pinpointing the roadblocks that prevents one from being renewed and one with God. In Philippians 2:5 the apostle Paul instructed us, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." Biblical psychology aides individuals on how to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

    3. My only concern with the passage you quoted Rev., PHIL 2:5, AS WELL as a similar verse Romans 12:2 "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God... is these scriptures tends to talk more in line with a change, more so "repentance", where we change our minds about who God is, and who we are. We now know we can do nothing to save ourselves, and that God loves us to save us despite us.

Before true repentance, man had no clue his need for transformation. It's only when the Spirit of God reveals through the word of God his sinful state, the power of the cross, the SHED BLOOD to take away his sins, his mind is renewed.

To make a statement referencing the "blood of Jesus" as mythology is utter BLASPHEMY. It is through the blood man's mind is transformed and continue to be transformed.

They had no business making such an ignorant statement, as they confess to be followers of the Savior. No need for that.

God sent His SON WHO died, the Son sent us a Comforter, the Holy Spirit to comfort us emotionally and mentally.

Christ said "but the Comforter which is the Holy Ghost whom the father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance whatever I have said unto you."

      He goes on to say...

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you, not as the world giveth, give I unto you let not your heart be troubled neither let it be afraid".

Their statement alone is a turnoff and a strong indication that they will mislead and misguide, getting folks hyped about an emotional subject like "mental illness", getting paid for doing so. These people are a bunch of snakes, and will crawl on their bellies hissing doctrines of lies to those with itching ears, and spit venom into the souls of carnel minded individuals who really don't want to know the truth about the SAVIOR.

God gives gifts to His saints to bring comfort and encouragement to the mentally disturbed. A lot of folks say that these things should be medically treated, yet it's a known fact lots of what's prescribed can cause deeper depression, illusions, chemical imbalances, and suicidal thoughts. I doubt these ILLETERATE AND FALSE teachers will hone in on these facts.

THIS MADNESS IS SAD and RIDICULOUS! ALL I CAN SAY IS... THE Lord's judgment awaits any who taint HIS PRECIOUS BLOOD...
