Question For Today: Should Christians Cremate Their Loved Ones?

Reader cremation means “to reduce to ashes by burning.” With the untimely death of Prince, death and cremation are dominating our news cycle. Some church leaders have chosen this time to speak out concerning cremation and burial. When considering the matter, we find that God commanded burial -- not cremation.  Whenever most Christians are asked about their final wishes concerning their body after death most will choose burial.  Some if not all Christians believe that the Bible supports burial over cremation.  While others believe it does not matter, either way.

Some on social media don't understand why Pastor John Piper felt the need to write a post like the one linked above.  Folks seem to think it could be upsetting to many Christians who have carried out this wish for a loved one or chosen it for themselves as part of a last well or directive.
"It really seems to have an air of condemnation to it that's unnecessary and hurtful. My dad and step-dad were both cremated and I don't believe there is scriptural, support to say they will not have resurrection bodies just as glorious as someone who has been embalmed and "planted" in the ground. Yes, it's nice symbolism but that's all it is."

Pastor John Piper also suggest that churches should provide help for those who may be forced to choose cremation simply because it's cheaper. Do you agree?

  1. I'm not going to do cremation or you best belief if my wife goes first(I pray not), but she won't be cremated. But here's a link to Dr. Scott Johnson. Some things to think about. http://www.contendingfortruth.com/?p=7148

  2. GIRL...yall betta watch out for that cremation and stuff.

Yall didn't here bout that 800 pound man they cremated. When they tried to cremate the big man, the entire Cremetoriun caught on fire. If I'm lying, I'm flying. And yall know I aint got no wings, at least untile the LORD hook me up wit some/ "Ill fly away".

They said that fire crews had to extinguish the flames caused by the excessive heat and oil from the cremation.

And what about the stillborn baby who was cremated? Yall aint heard? When they went to look through the ashes, the found teeth in it that BELONGED TO ADULTS. I aint lying yall.

I don't see why anyone would want to cremate. Isn't hell gonna be one BIG CREMATION for all you sinners.

I think the Bible set precedence when you look in the OT to see the dignity on how the patriarch honored their dead...

"And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan.?"

Genesis 25:9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre; [10] The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.

I mean BURIAL throughout the OT...AND in case yall might have forgot...JESUS WAS BURRIED (ding, ding, ding)

Come on yall... yall should know better...

  3. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Why does it matter? The body is merely an earthly house for our soul and spirit. We are not this body. It's going to be dust again anyways... buried or cremated.

  4. Cremation was somewhat controversial in the old school church mainly because people thought I'd escape Hells fire and brimstone if there body was already burned at the time of their death.

Either way you go, for the Christian (or sinner), you still will be rewarded with either heaven or hell at the resurrection of either the just or the unjust. So do whatever you want with our body when it dies.
