Fix it Jesus: Pastor Spencer T Ellis Controversial "No Pimpin Straight Preaching Billboard!"

Readers, a Detroit pastor has utilized an unusual form of advertising to draw more people into his church, by way of a controversial billboard.  The billboard is getting a lot of attention, but some question if it is the right kind of attention.  Pastor Spencer T Ellis, the pastor of the Citadel of Praise church, bought space on the billboard that have gotten the attention of the community.  The large sign shows a picture of a “pimped-out” preacher holding a handful of cash and wearing gold chains around his neck.

The pimp has a giant no symbol around him and a message written in large bold letters that says, “No Pimpin’! Straight Preachin’!” The billboard, located on a roadside at Grand River near the Southfield freeway, is meant as a shot against the reality television show, “Preachers of Detroit.” Ellis believes that the preachers on the show are drawing more attention to themselves than to what truly matters. Lord have mercy, I know Bishop Charles Ellis his older Brother is livid.

  1. I can clearly understand the message they are trying to send out...they don't want the peoples money...they are preaching the word and at no cost like most churches with these collection plates...they want people to come for worship not pay the preachers bills.

    1. Anonymous the money to get him more offerings from his members by erecting this sign could be used to do some real work in the community. IJS! This is very degrading and insulting to blk folk.

    2. Isn't that the point of a billboard? To get attention? Like it or not - its definitely drawing attention..

    3. They straight up pimping at every church when they pass that plate. This is why the Vatican is covered in gold and why TV evangelists live in mansions and have drivers. It's just another form of pimping. Preach about no pimping, just pass that plate.

  2. Wrong approach for a house of worship.

    1. Milinda Jenkins, why do you think it's the wrong approach?

    2. You don't need gimmicks to draw people to God.

  3. For all who don't know this my friend and Pastor Spencer T. Ellis has been using this same bill board for several years now. This isn't the first, and I hope it won't be the last one. It's a strong statement and it needed to be said. Where was the news coverage for the "Got Men" or the "Imperfect people welcomed" ones? Real men serve God...."Flawed" people need God too. My favorite was the Hell, I'm not going.

Pastor Spen has a habit of meeting folks where they are. In the hood , hurt or unhappy..... We at COP have always worked to lead people to their own relationship with God. No need to be ignorant in your opinion. You can't have it both ways. You wonder why the church doesn't speak out.... then you talk trash when it does. I'd rather have God and not need him, then to need God and not have him.

    1. Pastor Spencer does think out the box and sometimes he says things that I think is unnecessary or inappropriate when preaching, but he is a good pastor, he was raised by one of the best preachers I knew coming up!!!

  4. Ms.Ann some people will like the billboard and some people will find fault in it. That is the way of everything. Doesn't bother me in the least. To each his/her own.

  5. Do what you got to do to make sure you are among the minority of those who are sanctified (set apart). I commend him! He needs to let the town know all the "Ellis's" are not selling out to the foolishness of television.

  6. Not a bad message. Right on point for many people who view the preacher as a pimp. I think it's funny and provokes discussion. I and many others would visit to hear what message he's preaching... Mission accomplished

It seems he's focusing on putting new wine into new wineskins.
