Fix It Jesus: Raven-Symone “I’m Not African American And Don’t Call Me Gay”

Oprah warns Raven Symone not to set Twitter on fire, she promptly sets Twitter on fire. First off, I don't think Raven Samone, is weird as some or labeling her.  She has done quite well for herself, considering she grew up in the spotlight.

I agree, it would be nice to be looked at just as a person. Just because someone says you are African-American does not mean you are personal from Africa.  My understanding of the label African American is somewhat different and it has a different meaning to me.  It means our ancestor somewhere down the line was a descendent of Africa through the slave trade. Another point is that not all Africans are dark skinned, and if you are gay that's your business, but don't deny it, and call it something else.

  1. She's not weird but Raven sounds a bit confused. What does she want to be labeled as? If your gay then so what! Who cares?? And looking at Raven she looks like a African American to me! Maybe your not happy with who you are! IJS

    1. She doesn't want to be labeled as anything and that's the whole point of her statement. She's in a relationship with a female but why does she have to be called a "lesbian" she's black....clearly we see that but she doesn't want to be labeled solely by the color of her skin. Not once did she disown her race. She's not confused. She made perfect sense to me. It's people like you who are going to make more out of it than it really is.

  2. Comment by Sheree L Greer: When making the statement that one is born here in America and wants to only identify as American, you cannot leave off the part where as much as we want to claim it and love it, America makes clear its disdain for our skin color. You can reject labels all day; I just ask that you don't cut that sentiment short. Even a simple, "I am American and will be glad when America accepts me as I am" goes a long way in making the sentiment more honest, more telling, more reflective of our frustration as black (and gay) Americans.

  5. Not all Africans in America today are direct descendants of slavery. There is a huge group who are either born in Africa or parents were. I really don't see the fuss about being called African American Sounds so much better than being called a colour. She doesn't want labels she doesn't want to own who she is. Did she not read labels to choose her hair dye or is this label rejection limited to race an sexuality. oh well
