Lord Have Mercy: People Are Suggesting That Bishop Charles E. Blake, Sr. Cancel The 107th Holy Convocation In St. Louis, MO?

Some folks on Facebook are suggesting that Bishop Blake, should, abandon, scrap, drop, ax, scrub, cancel, nix, the 107th Holy Convocation, that's  slated to be held in  St. Louis, Missouri in November.  The old church has issued via it's social media home page a call for calm and  prayer in the wake of what's happening taking place in Ferguson St. Louis. So the question become, should Bishop Blake, even entertain the idea of canceling the 107th Holy Convocation? Thoughts anyone!

(August 12, 2014) The Church of God in Christ (COGIC) joins the family of Michael Brown in asking for calm and peace in the aftermath of the shooting and killing of their son. Eighteen year old Brown, known as a “gentle giant,” was only days away from beginning his college studies. It is imperative that the community resist the temptation to retaliate by looting and rioting in our own neighborhoods. Instead, we must allow the St. Louis County Police Department and the FBI’s investigations, regarding the senseless death of this young African American male to go forward. The destruction of property in Ferguson, Missouri only hurts our communities and places more lives at risk. Furthermore, this riotous behavior takes away attention and resources from these extremely critical investigations. I ask that we all remain patient and wait for the results of the investigations. During the next few days, please avoid settings that may put you at risks in any way. Most importantly, please remember to pray for Michael’s family, especially his parents, Michael Brown, Sr. and Lesley McSpadden, as they prepare to lay their son to rest. _________________________________________

  1. I think Bishop Blake, should really think about and consider doing so. It would make a big statement.

  2. If they are serious about getting younger people involved in the organization this could be the perfect chance to show them and the world that the old church is not dead and they do understand.

  3. I agree, In the wake of all that's going on in St. Louis. should the convocation still be held there this year? That's a good question. What do you say Bishop Blake?

  4. Canceling the convocation would be down right cowardly!! This is a time of crisis, and if the church decides to look the other way and run in the opposite direction, it might as well disband all together because it would have lost all of its credibility. The church is supposed to be fearless, faithful, and ready to lay their lives down for their fellow brother! I guess some of y'all missed that because you were too busy shouting for your material blessings and trying to look "saved".

    1. I agree, God's word says, I didn't give you the spirit of fear, but of love and sound mind. Canceling the convocation is the spirit of fear and that's not of God.

  5. Instead of thinking that it would be a cowardly move for them to cancel the Convocation, how about reflecting on how Jesus escaped out of the crowd because tensions were so high and there was the threat of eminent danger ( St. Luke 4:21-30 ? The bible warns us to "Watch and Pray" and to use "wisdom ". What if they said that there was going to be the worst hurricane approaching during the time of the planned Convocation, would you expect them to still gather? For what reason? The Holy Convocation is a religious gathering of the Saints and it is not the day of Judgment that is inevitable. Sometimes you have to use common sense along with walking in "Faith". Jesus is PERFECT, yet he had enough human "sense" to know when to avoid unnecessary distractions. Why are you criticizing the saints for praising their "material blessings" and yet you say they should gather in the midst of "Civil unrest " ? It sounds like whatever decision they make , the COGIC leadership will be condemned and criticized by other religious hypocrites that are trapped in obscurity and im an impoverished emotional/economic state.

    1. Jesus brought the truth to the crowd, which incensed them. He was able to slip through the impending violence by way of the same power of the Lord that the COGIC claims to be filled with. A hurricane cannot be compared to a social issue; as humans have no control over natural disasters, but we most certainly have control of how we treat each other. If the church is unwilling to take a firm courageous stand in the face of adversity and civil unrest then what good is it?

I criticize the saints for praising their material possessions because that’s all they seem to be concerned with. Perhaps you need to reflect on James 2: 4-17 What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, ‘Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead

Or… Mark 10: 42-45 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

    2. Well, if you feel so passionate about the social unrest in MO, then YOU GO! Stop sitting in your ignorant blissful/critical state, and YOU, become a great "social activist ". Make sure your Life Insurance is paid up to date and leave your family ( spouse/children ) and go to the front lines of the very next civil unrest situation. You stated , "that`s all they seem to be concerned with ". You have not spoken to each and every individual saint of God associated with the COGIC, so stop acting like you have the right to judge people/individuals you don't even know. How dare you make such a hasty generalization and group all of the COGIC saints together as if we don't have individual minds. We don't all think, act, serve, give worship the same. If you think you know so much about the inadequacies concerning the COGIC, the either put up or shut-up. If you think you can judge a whole Denomination because they may make decisions that you don't agree with you are being judgmental and plain ole silly. Turn around and listen to what your enemies are saying about your behavior, your work ethic and your deficits. How about YOU , Get off your duff and you start showing up in the midst of violent situations and take a stand. Furthermore take you whole family and put them on the front lines. If you don't then ..WHAT GOOD ARE YOU? ? ? ?

  6. Bishop Blake will not cancel this event, too much money to be made.

  7. From the look of things are they going to be able to have convocation there this year?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Move the convocation back to Memphis.

    ReplyDelete
  9. What would be the point of cancelling? Ferguson is a suburb of St. Louis, far enough away from where convocation will be held. Also, the crowds have quieted down significantly. Most importantly, I think this is a perfect opprtunity for the church because we can all gather together in unity and pray for this family, this community, and for our nation. There is something so powerful in corporate prayer. I think our Presiding Bishop should not cancel!
