Church Announcement: First Lady, First Gentleman Is A Hierarchical Structure That Is Unbiblical.

From Facebook: I have an issue with pastors wives in the, black church  who are called the first lady or first gentleman,  it is no script in the bible that backs up being being either one. Jesus never spoke of this! So that means someone added words or made up their own first lady. Deuteronomy 4:2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

  1. I too despise the term “first lady” when referring to the Pastor wife! I wouldn’t be a part of a church that has a “first gentlemen”. So that is a moot point. The ultmate pastor’s wife is the one makes it her primary purpose to minister to her husband. Forget about the being the president of this, that, and the other thing, just make sure all her husbands needs are met. No one else can meet ALL the pastors NEEDS like his wife.

    1. I too have grown to hate that title and until I read this, I never heard of the first gentleman. The church has really lost the fear of God and is fast becoming an object of mockery. But I am still believing God for national revival and repentance in the body of Christ.

    2. SOOO, what does the church call the husband of a woman who is pastoring? If first lady is alright for the male pastor, then why is a mockery before God when a woman has a supportive and dedicated husband by her side? I suspect you never heard of the term first gentleman because you have ALWAYS viewed the role of pastor as Male only.

    3. The Word of God proclaims, “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.” (1 Timothy 2:11-12). In the church, God assigns different roles to men and women. This is a result of the way mankind was created and the way in which sin entered the earth, "For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression." (1 Timothy 2:13-14). God, through the apostle Paul, restricts women from serving in roles of teaching and/or having spiritual authority over men in the church. This precludes women from serving as pastors in churches over men, which definitely includes preaching to, teaching, and having spiritual authority.

  2. I cannot tell you how sickened I am about the amount of “idolatry” in African-American churches I have attended, as it relates to leadership (even the ‘first lady”). Of course there is so much bad theology floating around in African-American churches, I cannot begin to start a discourse on that.

  3. I used to belong to a church that had a female pastor and the husband was referred to as the First Gentleman.. So not all… “First G’s” are from same gender churches as some folks think. I will acknowledge that as a community we do put more emphasis on titles then what is really relevant at times… Yet it does reaffirm that from a pastor to his/her congregation that my marriage is important and if you respect me you should respect the one who labors with me in and out of church. The old mentality was that a minister had to sacrifice home and family to “serve” in the church. Not true at all it should be something supported as a family. Scripture does support clergy being the husband to one wife only…. so their should be an example.

    1. There was a reason Paul states that and it is Not because God only calls men to pastor. Do your research on the church of Thessalonica and the church at Ephesus. You will see the issues going on at those two churches. Also, as quite as it is kept, Paul appointed a woman to hold down one of the churches in Asia Minor. Also, God call and anointed Deborah as Judge over Israel with her husband Lapodoth by her side as she ruled. Remember, Scripture says God is no respector of persons, He will pour our His Spirit on All flesh

  4. No where in the Bible do I read that the wife of a pastor is referred to as
First Lady, co-pastor or head of the women's ministry.

In many cases the wife "ASSUMES" the position as a leader in the church simply because SHE IS THE PASTORS WIFE, with no thought to examine if she is even qualified to lead.

The title of "FIRST LADY" is just an ego stroking, head inflating, prestige seeking way for the pastor to make sure the churches power stays in HIS family.

As for first gentle, I just can't go there.

    1. Your words are SOOOOOOOOOOOO true! Putting some pastor's wives in this position gives way to a 'Jezebel spirit' that runs other anointed women in the ministry away while she holds a position she is not qualified spiritually, biblically, or emotionally to handle. 'Hurting people hurt other people.' Sometimes (not all) she has as many or more issues than the people she is being charged to lead and minister to.

  5. I'd be happy to know if someone can point to a biblical model for "pastor" that is remotely close to what churches have today.

    1. There is none. They treat him more like a king than a pastor.

  6. First of all, I am not sure why the title first lady/ gentleman is reduced to the black church. White churches and clergy use the title just as much as "we" do. i.e. United Methodist, Southern Baptist and Lutherans. And since some of you struggle and choke on the title first lady/gentleman; the black church has run away with the title armor bearer, and what's interesting is White churches and clergy don't use it ( unless their staff and or membership is largely African American) Neither title is mentioned in scripture but if you're going to pick words and titles and their inappropriateness because they're not in scripture, then don't stop at first lady/man. Let's get Trinity, Easter, Christmas, ordained, pulpit, evangelism, bible, Lent, Bishop (used as title ). OK,I'll let that marinate...... discuss amongst yourselves.
