A flyer from a church sent to 30,000 homes in the Charlotte area was meant to spread the word about the congregation. Instead, it is causing controversy. The front of the mailer, which was sent from the Lake Norman Christian Outreach Church in Mooresville, reads, "Great Sex God's Way." The other side lists the topics of upcoming sermons, including, "Pimping Made Easy - Sex for Sale" and "Is it Really Sex - Self Gratification."
While teaching about sex in a biblical manner is not a bad thing if done properly. But the manner in which this was promoted was inappropriate, but that's just my humble opinion. What do you think? Was it inappropriate for the church to call attention to it self in this manner?
Tim Burgess, a father who lives in the University area, was surprised recently when his 6-year-old daughter got the mail and brought the flyer inside.
“I took a look at it and thought, ‘This is highly inappropriate,’” Burgess said.
The young girl, along with her 12-year-old brother, started asking questions.
“A child and families should have an opportunity to discuss this on their terms, not necessarily by what the postmaster drops off," he said.
Channel 9 brought Burgess's concerns to Pastor Lawrence Williams, who leads the non-denominational church. He said part of the titles, including "Pimping Made Easy," was misinterpreted.
"The intent of pimping made easy is not encouraging that we're going to be encouraging how to pimp but it's really dealing with the issue that we make it easy because of the way we live our lives," he said.
Williams said he's received about two dozen phone calls with complaints. The church sent out 30,000 fliers. They held a similar series of sermons last year. Then, their congregation grew from 60 people to about 130.
Williams said sex is everywhere today, and that it's important to be proactive in confronting today's issues.
"It's a little bit frustrating in counseling so many people that are dealing with these sexual issues that have caused so many problems because no one wanted to talk about it,” he said.
He also said he can see the church conducting a similar series of sermons again, but he is not sure if they will go about advertising it in the same way.
