Why do most Christians cringed at the very word meditation? I had an opportunity Sunday to explain meditation to my Sunday School class.....in their young minds, they automatically connect this discipline to
yoga Eastern religions or some other type of mystical activity....I explain to them...along with prayer meditation is one of the most powerful discipline a Christian can possible develop in this life...so, when trials
come hit, you don't fall apart....instead you begin to meditate on God's goodness and not the problems....in fact, you will have pondered His promises so deeply, that they will become more real to you than any situation you are experiencing.
According to Webster's Dictionary, meditation is "to engage in contemplation or reflection; to focus one's thoughts on: reflect on or ponder over."
I explain that we all meditate on different things every day ,
bills how we're going to pay them,a negative diagnosis the doctor gave us etc we sit and think on it over and over...we focus our thoughts on it....we contemplate how it might affect other areas of our life....I also let them know the difference between a Christian meditation and a pagan meditation....It's the FOCUS of the thought....in eastern religions, their focus is emptiness...their goal is to totally empty themselves and their minds...but, the goal of the Christian is exactly the opposite....when we meditate, our goal is not to be made empty, but to be made full with Christ...I love Psalm 1 because it reveals God's promise for those of us willing to discipline our minds through Bible meditation....It says that we will bear fruit, and that everything we do shall prosper..
Question: Are you a Christian who practices "meditation"?
