When Is A Church No Longer A Church?

A prominent Spring Lake church removed its cross last  Tuesday and has changed its name as part of a series of moves intended to make it more inclusive....The church was formerly known as Christ Community Church.... The Rev. Ian Lawton, the church’s pastor, said the name change and removing the cross were designed to reflect the church’s diverse members....The pastor claims The cross has become a negative symbol for a lot of people. Our community has been a really open-minded community for some years now,” he said. “We’ve had a number of Muslim people, Jewish people, Buddhists, atheists. ...We’re catching up (to) ourselves.”

A Church is a  body of Christian believers, who hold the same creed, observe the same rites, and acknowledging the same ecclesiastical authority....Now I don't know about you but for  me this does not qualify as a true church... Jesus was the center of the cross that's why  the cross has become the center of Christianity. “.

  1. Uh. That may be a church, but it ain't a Christian church.

Look -- it's cool for folks to believe what they want, but I tire so of people wanting to stretch Christianity to fit them. That is not at all how this works.

If you want to believe things outside of what has been clearly laid out for us, that's absolutely fine but you can't call that Christianity. And you know, I feel like people don't do that with any other religion/faith.

    Drives me crazy.

  2. I'm rather liberal -- but yanking a cross of your church seems rather ridiculous. Do Jews remove the Star of David off a Synagogue to be less offensive. Are Muslims now going to take down the Moon and Crescent?

It seems to me that too may church folks thinking that they need to be 'hip' to bring in disciples. Funny how most Mosques are stuck in the 13th Century and they have new converts all the time -- even when half the right wing media equates Islam to terrorism.

My advice, focus on the Word and nothing else. Seek God and build disciples, people will come.

  3. You are right the cross is the symbol of Christianity, anyone who does not embrace the cross is an anitchrist. Sadly this pastor is leading people astray.
it is no longer a church but a social gathering. If the cross is negative symbol that mean he won't preach about the cross anymore. Sad day for Christianity.

  4. Wow...this is rather alarming when a pastor would make a statement that the cross has become a negative symbol. The cross made the resurrection possible. Those are the central message of Christianity.

  6. Looks like this church is going in a direction to embrace the teachings of many religions. This is fine. It's not a purely Christian church anymore though even if it still teaches Christ's word. I mean if this minister is reaching a diverse congregation by using diverse teaching, cool. But, if he is teaching only from the bible to these people, I don't get removing signs of Christianity.

  7. Hmmm. Sounds like the pastor is exchanging the power of the gospel for a form of godliness by denying the power thereof. Unfortunate. That is alarming and down right disturbing. The pastor has someone or something in his ear and its not God if he thinks he is going to be effective this way. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot on purpose.
