Senior Pastor Take HIV/AIDS Test During Sunday Worship Service.

The senior pastor of historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta took an HIV/AIDS test during Sunday's worship service.

The Rev. Raphael Warnock said silence, shame and stigma are keeping people from being tested, and that the faith community must work to change that.

Warnock took the test as part of the National Week of Prayer for Healing of AIDS.

He stepped away from the pulpit, sat down and took a rapid oral fluid test.

Twenty minutes later, he announced that the results were negative, according to WXIA-TV.

"Amen," he said.

Warnock challenged other clergy to follow his lead, and after the service Ebenezer provided free and confidential tests to church members, the station reported.

  1. The black church has been the most judgmental institution- constantly criticizing and shunning people with real problems. It is good to see that we are beginning to understand and face some of the problems people have. To see a pastor take a test like that will give the members courage to take the tests.

My church has an AIDS/STD awareness day and also support groups for people with drug and sexual problems. Much progress and much help has come from those groups. I think that black people must do what they do to help themselves, and the black church can be very instrumental in that... especially when they get the judmental characteristics out of the picture.

  2. Amen LadyLee! The black church has been unfortunately of the black community HIV/AIDS epidemic and HIV/AIDS ignorance and most of all fear. it is a shameful period in the history of our churches, so it's wonderful to see that finally see ministers take the lead in restoring common sense approach to this issue. It's about time. No, it's way past time.

  3. Interesting story, and I appreciate his good intentions. However, I wonder about two things:

    1. Did he take the test ahead of time, found out he was negative, making it easy to do this publicly, and,

    2. Did he have professional counselors on stand by to assist a church member who might have tested positive?

    5. Why did Andrew Jackson begin reforming the prison system when he invaded Florida in 1818
    6. Why did the preacher not say lets put together a tasks force to find the numbers behind Aids and Africans
    7. The preacher what does his lack of Aids have to with his lack of faith
