Bristol Palin and The Double Standard..

Why is Sarah Palin’s 17-year-old daughter “off-limits” and deserves some privacy? May be its that double standard thing. The religious right rather than condemn Bristol for “living in sin instead they commend her for not getting an abortion. On the other hand, let that had been a black unwed teenager from the inner city who's pregnant, these same right winger would denounce it as evidence that our society is crumbling apart. So kinda way they would have blame HIP-HOP. Where is the fire-and-brimstone crowd? The right wing is trying to make Bristol Palin out to be a role model. Really! Now Bristol Palin is the role model for how pregnant teenage girls should react in such circumstances? Please! give me a break with this non-sense. When a teenage welfare mom gets pregnant and opts against an abortion, how many times do we hear this as a “life-affirming” moment? When do we hear members of Congress go so far as to say that these girls are role-models? You don’t. When the subject is a pregnancy to an unwed, minority teenage mother growing up in some urban area, it becomes fodder for lectures from conservatives about bad parenting, the perils of welfare spending and so on. But when the subject is a pregnancy to an unwed, white teenager from some small town in a Republican state, it’s a celebration of the wonders of God's magnificence—and choosing life! My question why the double standard? Why is it OK for the daughter of a right-wing Governor to be pregnant and unmarried but not for a poor black teenager? Sounds to me like double standard.

  1. I cannot agree more. If it were Obama's daughter, the religious right would have a field day. If she got an as living out the sinful values this nation has fallen prey to. If she kept her baby, they would say, "here we go again, supporting all those black unwed teen mothers and their babies." The fact that the religious right remains silent on this issue confirms what I have believed all along, that their views are really a cover for prejudiced beliefs. If they practiced what they preached, they would say something about the issue. I am a proud Black Christian, and issues like this show me why I am always eager to distance myself from the religious right.

  2. Amen and Amen again! Gov Palin and her ilk preach abstinance, no birth control or sex education.
That young man and woman are now being pushed into marriage and they are not out of high school. They are not even mature enough to have safe sex. Or maybe they didn't know what that was.

  4. Hi, I am anonymous from above. I made a mistake above. Here is my revised comment:

  5. First of all, I enjoy your blog.
Secondly, I completely agree. The evangelicals seem to be proud to encourage a shotgun-wedding when it's a white girl, but god-forbid the same thing happen to an unmarried black woman.
The religious right can't judge quickly enough, but when it's one of their own they encircle the young like elephants do when there is a threat.
I sense a seething rage from these people. A paranoid, implicit racism that goes deep.

  6. Amen!

Oh young white teens are heroines when the get pregenant (Juno), young black girls are scandilized statistics, labeled Nappy headed @#*'s.

This is the family that will lead America if McCain-o-saurus is elected and dies in office.

Which, if he's elected at age 72, and looks like he's about to go any minute.

Sorry, the Republicans should be ashamed of themselves on this one.
